Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 3: Is Universal Saving The Show?

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 3

The second season of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist ended on May 16, 2021. Almost a month later, NBC has announced its decision about the future of musical comedy: there will be no season 3. The network has chosen to cancel the TV series. Showrunner Austin Winsberg previously revealed that there was talk of the possibility of porting the fantastic world of Zoey to Peacock, Universal’s streaming service. This scenario was not feasible.

It Might Be Possible

As reported by Variety, however, a representative of Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the series, stated that there would be the intention to try to sell the title so that it continues to give splendid performances and great emotions to the loyal fans:

“In a world where it’s never easy to find a loyal and passionate audience, we believe there must be a home for this incredible and award-winning show with a dedicated following.”

Both Lionsgate TV and Winsberg himself asked fans to make their voices heard, tweeting with the hashtag #SaveZoeysPlaylist. At the beginning of August, then the situation began to move. To come forward was the streaming platform Roku, which would be interested in making a two-hour film of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, with the possibility, if victorious, to carry on the TV series. Nothing is certain yet, but negotiations are underway.

If the attempt to save the show were to be successful, with the intervention of the streaming service, there would be quite a few positive implications for the TV series, according to the showrunner. For example, the greater flexibility that digital platforms offer would allow greater creative freedom, saving the team from cutting musical numbers due to episode timing, which cannot be surpassed on networks.

Showrunner Sheds Light

When the show does not find another home, the story will remain without a worthy conclusion. Thanks to TVLine, we learned that for showrunner Austin Winsberg the season finale that aired was not made to be a final series.

“I approached it as if there was a continuation. Some things have been answered at the end of the season, and at the same time, there are also some cliffhangers that we have left unresolved because of basic storylines for the third season. At no point in the trial was I told not to. I wanted to end the season on a positive note.”

This positive note is represented by the confrontation that Zoey and Max have had, during which they have declared their feelings to each other. Both of them don’t know where their relationship will take them, but now they are ready to live it. Even then, the young entrepreneur witnessed a Zoey “heart song” for the first time.

But what happened? Why was it he who witnessed such a moment this time? This would undoubtedly have been a confidential topic for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist season 3. The last word is not yet said, however.
