With over 1000 manga chapters and 980 episodes of anime, and an epic Wano arc, One Piece shows no signs of slowing down. Eiichiro Oda, the creator of this series, has been dishing out heartstopping arcs filled with action and adventure and the hunger for a quest since 1999.
And even after all these years we don’t know the answer to the main question: What exactly is One Piece? Following it is the less significant one: Will it ever end? (And as fellow die hard fans you’ll agree and we don’t want it to ever end). But that wish aside we do want our favourite crew to achieve their dreams. For Luffy to become Pirate King, for Zoro to win over Mihawk, Sanji to find All blue, Nami to make the world map and more. And for all that to happen One Piece needs to end (or continue with side arcs. Wishful thinking, sue us).
And if your head is muddled right now with Luffy, Zoro who? (10/10 would recommend, watch One Piece), we will give you a gist of what the anime is all about.
Stop, who are Straw Hats?
The series is centered on Monkey D. Luffy, a young man inspired by childhood idols and powerful pirate “Red hair” Shanks, set out from the East Blue Sea, looking for veritable treasures and calling himself the King of Pirates Organizing his own Straw Hat Pirate Crew,
Luffy rescued a swordsman named Roronoa Zoro and became friends with them, and they began to look for the Pirate King. The navigator and thief Nami (Nami) joins them on the journey; Usopp, the sniper and morbid liar; and the perverted chef Vinsmoke Sanji. They acquired a ship called Going Merry and clashed with the famous East Blue pirates.
As Luffy and his team continued their adventure, others joined the team later in the series, including Tony Tony Chopper, a medic and an anthropomorphized reindeer; Nico Robin, archaeological scientist and former assassin; Franky, a cyborg carpenter; Brook, a skeleton musician. and swordsman; and the fisherman’s helmsman Jinbei, who was once the Seven Warlords of the Sea. As they sailed in the sea to find their dreams, they encountered other pirates, bounty hunters, criminal organizations, revolutionaries, secret agents and soldiers of corrupt world governments, and various other friends and enemies.
We wouldn’t try to deceive you and say that it is a completely wholesome anime (It is a pirate anime we aren’t even going to try). But with a man as cheerful as Luffy, there are moments that you cannot help but smile. It has its own action sequences with severe fights but it is equally wholesome scenes that will make your heart swell. The dynamics of the Straw Hat crew is especially good to see.
So, is it ever going to end?
Oda has confirmed that the critically acclaimed manga is about to end, and the 35th issue announced that the series is “going towards the next ultimate legend.” Although fans have known that the manga is about to end for some time, this confirmation sets a clear time frame for how long the story will take to end.
In 2019, the mangaka revealed in a YouTube video that he wanted to complete One Piece in five years. Oda had already figured out the ending a few years ago. Manga editor Nato Takuma also reiterated Oda’s statement that the manga is about to end. Oda previously stated in 2016 that comics accounted for 65%.
Judging from the current events in the Wano Chapter, Luffy’s and the Straw Hats’ journey seems to be really coming to an end. (Prepare the tissues!)
