When Will the World Tourism Day 2022 Be Celebrated? What is Its Significance?

World Tourism Day 2022

In this post, we’ll learn about the history of World Tourism Day, what it means, and other facts. Keep reading until you get to the end for more information.

About World Tourism Day

Everyone wants to travel and see new things, but the Covid-19 pandemic not only slowed down both developed and developing economies, but it also had huge social and economic effects that hit the most vulnerable and marginalized people the hardest.

This is why travel restrictions need to be lifted and tourism needs to start up again right away to help start the recovery and growth process.

This year, World Tourism Day highlights tourism’s unique ability to make sure that no one is left behind as the world starts to open up again and look to the future. This goes along with the goal of the day, which is to show how important the travel industry is for preserving and promoting culture and heritage around the world.

Date and History of World Tourism Day

The late Nigerian Ignatius Amaduwa Atigbi came up with the idea of having World Tourism Day on September 27 every year. In 2009, he was finally given credit for what he had done. Blue is the color of World Tourism Day.

Every year since 1980, September 27 has been World Tourism Day all over the world. On this day in 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization were approved. These rules are seen as a turning point in the history of tourism around the world.

This made it possible for the UNWTO to be set up five years later. On September 27, 1980, UNWTO held the first World Tourism Day as an international event.

Significance of World Tourism Day

The goal of World Tourism Day is to bring attention to how tourism affects the social, cultural, political, and economic values of the whole world. In the middle of a pandemic, it’s important to bring attention to the tourism industry, since 90% of world heritage sites closed last year because of the pandemic, and many young people in rural areas lost their jobs.

In 2020, an extra 32 million people fell into extreme poverty. Women have been hit the hardest by the global crisis caused by the pandemic, especially in the least-developed countries. One reason for this is that they tend to work in tourism and other industries that were hit the hardest by the spread of Covid-19.

UNWTO says that World Tourism Day is a global event that raises awareness of the social, cultural, political, and economic value of tourism and how it can help reach the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Theme of World Tourism Day 2022

The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is “Rethinking Tourism.” The well-thought-out theme is meant to start a discussion about how tourism and development should be rethought. By choosing this theme, UNWTO is basically trying to get everyone, from governments and businesses to local communities, to agree on how to make the tourism sector more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.

What is Rethinking Tourism and Which Country Will Host World Tourism Day 2022?

Each year a different country hosts World Tourism Day, which follows a distinct theme. The topic of the first World Tourism Day, held in 1980, was “The contribution of tourism to the preservation of cultural heritage and to international peace and understanding.”

India was the host in 2019, and the theme was “Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All.” In 2020, the theme was “Tourism and Rural Development.” The host country in 2021 was South Africa, and the subject was “Tourism for Inclusive Growth.”

This year’s host is Indonesia, with festivities beginning in Bali. The concept is to prioritize people and the environment, and the goal is to unite individuals from all walks of life to make the sector inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.

All UNWTO member states, in addition to non-members and industry stakeholders, will stage their own celebrations in observance of the day’s theme.

How to Take Part in World Tourism Day 2022?

Numerous nations participate in September activities that promote sustainable tourism and raise awareness about its cultural, economic, political, and social contributions. On this day, tourists are given flowers and folk performances and cultural events are held, etc.

Some regions even offer free admission to museums and monuments during the day. The government and travel agents offer discounts on flights and accommodations. Tourism-related lectures, educational excursions, drawing contests, and exhibitions are hosted by workplaces, institutions, and schools.

Participate in the competitions of the day; attend a presentation or live session. Or simply be a tourist in your own city by taking a bicycle trip and seeing the city in a different light. Plan a trip, reserve a hotel, and depart. Ultimately, travelling is to live.
