Outer Banks spoilers follow, including the season two finale.
Okay, we’ll need Outer Banks season three right away (Netflix, we hope you’re listening).
Between the big reveal about John B’s father and the Pogues’ somewhat bittersweet end, we’ve been left with a lot of questions that only a new batch of episodes will be able to answer.
Following the season two finale cliffhanger and looking ahead to Outer Banks season three and all the possibilities it may hold, here’s what we know so far.
Outer Banks Season 3 Release Date: When Can We Expect More Episodes?
Pogues, rejoice! Season three of Outer Banks has been confirmed for December 2021… now we just have to wait and see when it will appear on our screens.
The cast of the show appeared in a video posted to Twitter, cheering, and saying, “All the way from Poguelandia, season three baby!”

This just arrived in Poguelandia…
In a February 2022 Instagram post, Netflix confirmed that the Pogues were back in action and that production for season three had begun. Madelyn Cline, Chase Stokes, Madison Bailey, Rudy Pankow, Jonathon Daviss, Carlacia Grant, and Drew Starkey were among the cast members in the sweet photo.
The post was titled: “Don’t call or text. There is no service in Poguelandia. OBX 3 is BACK IN STOCK.”

The first two seasons were separated by just over a year, with the first premiering in April 2020 and the second arriving at the end of July 2021. We also know that season two will begin filming in August 2020 and end in April 2021. Taking the eight-month production time into account, the earliest we can expect to see Outer Banks on our screens again is late 2022.
And, hopefully, it won’t be the last time we see the show.
Outer Banks executive producer Jonas Pate previously stated that he envisions the show continuing into season four or five, but whether the planned story is told ultimately depends on Netflix giving it the green light once more.
“Ever since we started, we’ve always viewed it as a four-season show, maybe a five-season show, but definitely four seasons,” Pate told Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve kind of arced it out pretty far. I’m just hoping we get the chance to tell those stories.”
Chase Stokes has also expressed his desire to continue playing John B in the near future, which is great news for OBX fans.
“I’d love to keep it going, but it all depends on how people react to it. We’re hoping that, like last year, people connect with the story and continue to fall in love with the journey of not just the Pogues, but the entire world of Outer Banks “Stokes explained to Cosmopolitan UK.
Who Will Return for Season 3 of Outer Banks?
With season three now officially underway, expect all of the main cast to return for more.
Following her split from onscreen (and now formally offscreen) partner Chase Stokes, rumors of Madelyn Cline’s departure circulated.
The two, who play Sarah Cameron and John B, made their relationship official in June 2020 and dated for a year.
Their split had fans wondering if Cline would return for a third season, but she made it public in a now-deleted Instagram story, putting the rumors to rest.
The 24-year-old wrote in the caption of her selfie:
“Hello, I’ve been asked if Season 3 is my final season of Obx. I’ll return for as many seasons as they’ll let me. I adore my job, and there isn’t a single day that goes by when I’m not thankful for it and everyone who has watched it. The internet does not always contain accurate information.”
Phew, because it appears that her character Sarah has a lot more in store for her.
In a recent interview with ELLE, the Knives Out 2 star stated:
“I want her to be content. I want to see her grow into herself. That would be the best thing for Sarah’s arc, in my opinion.”
She went on: “I’d like to see her and John B talk about what just happened. I’m interested in seeing how her personal relationships with her chosen family develop. Perhaps we could learn more about her and Kie’s friendship. Perhaps she’ll try to attend Pogue High School. Maybe watch her look for work.
“Season 2 was incredibly fast-paced, wild, and entertaining. And I believe that if we are fortunate enough to get a season 3 [which we now know they will!] I’d like to delve into some character development and get to know [Sarah] better.”
As previously stated, all of the main characters were featured in Netflix’s confirmation post. So we can safely assume that Chase Stokes as John B, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Daviss as Pope, and Rudy Pankow as JJ will all be back alongside Cline.
Drew Starkey will return as Rafe, while Carlacia Grant, who first appeared as Cleo in season three, has (thankfully) been promoted to series regular.
Charles Esten (Ward), Austin North (Topper), and Cullen Moss (Sheriff Shoupe) will also return.
There’s always the chance that some new faces will show up.
In episode 210 of outer banks, madelyn cline plays Sarah Cameron, rudy pankow plays JJ, Jonathan Daviss plays Pope, Chase Stokes plays John B, and Madison Bailey plays Kiara.
Outer Banks Season 3 Plot: How Will the Events of Season 2 Affect What Happens Next?
The season two finale of Outer Banks was a bit of a surprise.
Sarah and John B had continued their quest for the treasure throughout the series, reuniting with the rest of the Pogues in Charlotte. The gang avoided Ward, Rafe, and newcomer Carla (the threat of murder is never far from this bunch!)
During a dramatic run-in on a cargo ship, the Pogues had lost their newly acquired gold cross to – you guessed it – Sarah’s family, the Camerons. The gang narrowly escaped death (again) by jumping ship (literally), only to end up on a deserted island.
The season ended with Carla on her way to meet with John B’s father (! ), whom many assumed was dead – but clearly, he isn’t! He promised to help her find the Shroud of Turin (the magical healing cloth that was supposed to be hidden in the gold cross), but she had to help John B and his friends in return.
Season 2 of Outer Banks
“It’s going to be instrumental and maybe the spine [of season three], basically,” writer Shannon Burke added.
It appears that audiences will get that special moment after all, if showrunner Josh Pate has his way. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that “John B’s relationship with his father is a huge theme [that will shape season three].”
“Having his father back around, and eventually they’re going to meet up again, and John B has to reconcile his idealized version of his dead dad with the reality of his alive dad,” Pate added. “It provides us with a lot of thematic father-son material to work with.”
Shannon Burke, a writer, added: “It’s going to be crucial, and possibly the spine [of season three]. It’s obviously a huge revelation that will power a significant portion of the third season.”
Chase Stokes, who plays John B, has spoken out about what this revelation may mean for his character in the future.
He told TV Line that he “hopes to continue telling the story for a couple more seasons” and mused: “It wasn’t like he [Big John] was swept away by a natural disaster or something. It was his decision to leave his son, and how does that look? What does it look like when a child comes face to face with a parent who has abandoned him and has no idea what has happened in the meantime?”

Despite all of this promising talk, the Outer Banks showrunners do not have a “master plan” for the third season, according to TV Line – even if they do have some ideas for themes to explore further.
In terms of the approach to the show, this appears to be business as usual. In fact, when they were planning season two, Big John’s return wasn’t even guaranteed.
“We knew we had that card,” TV Line’s Jonas Pate said. “We didn’t know for sure that we’d play it, but around the sixth or seventh episode this year, when we were writing, we started to realize maybe we could do that.”
Season 2 of Outer Bank
Pate told Entertainment Weekly, “It was always a lingering idea, and thematically, it sets up some stuff we want to explore in the third season.”
“We shot different endings the first season because we weren’t 100 percent sure, and we had some alts on this season as well that we ended up not using,” Pate explained. “Sometimes you just don’t know until you put it together, and trial and error is definitely part of our process.”
Cleo is played by Carlacia Grant in Episode 202 of Outer Banks.
What About John B and Sarah?
“It’d be really fun in season three,” actor Madelyn Cline told Entertainment Tonight (via Newsweek), to see them “start to truly get to know each other in a very real sense.”
“They’re married,” she added, “but they don’t really know much about each other.”
Chase Stokes has also hinted that John B may have been a little hasty in his decision to marry, which could have implications for a third season.
“I believe John B clings to many of those around him. He is definitely more co-dependent than he gives himself credit for “Stokes explained to TV Line. “Sarah is now a lifeline in his life. And, like any good partner, you want to keep that person around, and society tells us, “Hey, there’s a little shiny thing you put on somebody’s finger.” You go to court, and that’s how you make it official.’
“It makes perfect sense when you’re young and in love, and you’re so caught up in the moment. And he hasn’t been consistent… His father has been gone for a while, so having something stable in his life is essential. He definitely overreaches a little, but for a kid who has been through so much trauma, it comes from the right place. Maybe it’s the wrong time for the wrong idea.”
Carlacia Grant (who plays Cleo) has told ELLE that she hopes for another romance as well as further development for her character in the future.
“If this whole Cleo and Pope thing happens,” she told the publication, “I’m really interested in seeing it.”
“And I’d like to learn more about Cleo’s past. Personally, I’d like to see more of her and where she came from. And I want her to be a bigger badass, definitely a bigger badass.”
That would be completely acceptable to us.
