The invasion by Vladimir Putin’s Russia of Ukraine has brought war back to Europe.

Many people are taking a closer look at military spending for the first time, so it’s a good time to compare the armed forces of the United Kingdom and its NATO partners to those of other countries.

WalesOnline has utilised the GlobalFirepower website’s PwrIndx ranking system to gauge the relative strength of various armed forces (GFP).

In order to create this information, we used statistics on each nation’s ability to wage conventional war on the ground, at sea, and in the air. GFP rankings are based on over 50 different variables, all of which are taken into account when determining how well a company is staffed, equipped, resourceful, and financially secure.

A fascinating insight into a more volatile global scene where war seems almost certain is provided by these rankings.

An overall score is assigned to every country in the world. The more formidable their military forces are, the closer they are to zero. The following are the world’s top twenty:

The United States maintains its position as the world’s foremost military power, despite having a smaller military than any other country.

Russia – Score: 0.0501

Russia has made enormous military expenditures in the last few years (which makes the resistance of the Ukrainians all the more heroic). The 2017 Military Expenditure Database of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) put Russia’s 2016 military expenditures at US$69.2 billion. Compared to the SIPRI estimate of Russia’s military budget for 2006, this estimate is approximately twice as high.

1,350,000 people are believed to be in the military as a whole (of which 250,000 are reserves and 250,000 paramilitaries).

In recent years, China has dramatically increased its military budget. According to official figures, China spent $250 billion on its military in 2018, an increase of 83% from 2009 to 2018. It is now the second-largest spender in the world, after the United States (though significantly less than the USA).

Given its turbulent and nuclear-armed northern neighbour, South Korea’s armed forces are one of the strongest and most powerful in the world, with a reported strength of 3,750,000 personnel in 2020. (650,000 active and 3,100,000 reserve).

There are an estimated 1,130,000 military troops, including 500,000 reserves and 75,000 active-duty members (paramilitary).
