“You are one of the best singers of our generation,” Andrew Lloyd Webber commented after Mermaid was revealed.
Gloria Gaynor’s disco anthem “I Will Survive” was a long-lasting hit. The two-time Grammy Award winner will no longer compete in The Masked Singer after being fired in another double unmasking on Wednesday (Oct. 19).
Fox’s funny favorite show returned to our television screens after missing last week due to a rain delay that forced the baseball playoffs to spill over.
There were lots of thrills and spills this time around as the participants celebrated “Andrew Lloyd Webber Night.” The British king of musicals was on hand to see the reveal of Maize and Mermaid.
Maize had the fewest votes after playing “Heaven On Their Minds” and was eliminated. Mario Cantone, the actor, comedian, and singer, emerged from behind his helmet.
Mermaid sang “Any Dream Will Do,” then competed with “Robo Girl” on “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from Evita. Mermaid was doomed because one had to go.
Gaynor, whose hallmark song “I Will Survive” spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1979, was hidden under the mask.
After the big announcement, Lloyd Webber informed the 79-year-old New Jersey native, “You are one of the finest singers of our generation.”
And why did Gaynor join the team? “I’ve been watching it since it looked like a lot of fun,” she explained. “I told myself, ‘Yeah, I’ve got to do this.'”
Earlier, Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger made a surprise appearance in Cats, performing “Memory.” Scherzinger made the song her own when she joined the cast of the 2014 West End revival of Cats, playing Grizabella and receiving a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for best actress in a supporting role.
Gaynor and Cantone join Daymond John (Fortune Teller) and the “Brady boys” Mike Lookinland, Barry Williams, and Christopher Knight (Mummies), Montell Jordan (Panther), Jeff Dunham (Pi-Rat), Chris Kirkpatrick (Hummingbird), Eric Idle (Hedgehog), and William Shatner (Knight) as celebrities eliminated from The Masked Singer’s current season.
Season 8 of TMS ushers in a new era with several major modifications to the show’s concept. For the first time, each episode begins with a brand-new round of masked celebrities, with just one contender progressing at the conclusion of the hour.
In addition, the audience votes in-studio for their favorite performance of the night, and the singer with the lowest score will unmask in the midst of the show before joining the new Masked Singer VIP section to watch the rest of the episode.
