Jesse Williams will reprise his role as Dr. Jackson Avery in the forthcoming 19th season’s fifth episode of the medical drama. Williams will also return to the show in the roles of director and guest actor. The fourth episode of the show, titled “When I Get to the Border,” will air on November 3 and will be directed by Williams.
After 12 seasons, Williams left Grey’s Anatomy as a series regular in the spring of 2021. Jackson left Grey Sloan to take over the family foundation in the Season 17 episode “Look Up Child,” which aired on May 6, 2021. April (Sarah Drew), his ex-wife, accompanied him there with their daughter. Williams appeared in a few more episodes during Season 17.
After that, he and Drew appeared as guest stars in the season 18 finale in May of last year, during which they revealed that Jackson and April had reconciled their differences and are once again romantically involved by kissing in the elevator at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
However, Grey’s Anatomy executive producer and director Debbie Allen will be returning to her recurring role as Jackson’s mother, Catherine, in Episode 1905. This is the episode in which Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) catches up with Jackson (Williams) while he is in Boston. Drew will not be appearing in this episode.
In other “When I Get to the Border” news, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Addison (Kate Walsh) drive to a family planning center to volunteer, but an ectopic pregnancy causes issues. In other news, the interns investigate Lucas’ (Niko Terho) relationship with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone).
In addition, Williams directed episodes of the ABC series Rebel, which was created by the creator and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, Krista Vernoff. He is an activist and a software entrepreneur, and he executive produced the Oscar-winning film Two Distant Strangers in 2021.
Williams is back on Broadway in the baseball-themed Take Me Out, for which he received a Tony nomination. Most recently, he co-starred with Owen Wilson in the Paramount+ original series Secret Headquarters, and he is slated to appear in the upcoming Netflix original series Your Place or Mine starring Reese Witherspoon.
