Tom Waits was born in Pomona, California on December 7, 1949. He was born into a middle-class household and typically described his childhood as “normal.” Tom became interested in music during his senior year of high school.
In high school, he studied the violin and guitar, and later, his father taught him to play the ukulele. Tom Waits has stated that his singing style was influenced by an uncle who had a raspy, gravelly voice.
Tom Waits debuted as a musician in 1971. Herb Cohen offered the single a publishing and recording contract. The recordings made under the contract were titled ‘Early Years, Volume One’ and ‘Early Years, Volume Two’ and were released in the 1990s.
Later, while performing at the Troubadour, Tom met David Geffen, who offered him another recording contract with Asylum Records. The resulting album, titled ‘Closing Time,’ was released in March 1973. The CD received little notice and did not sell well, much to the dismay of the fans.
Tom’s music career did not flourish throughout those years. He went on tours with other artists at the time. Tom was an alcoholic during those times, thus his lack of achievement was beginning to show in his personal life.
His music began to mirror his mood as well. The album ‘Small Change,’ published in 1976, contained tracks that portrayed despair and gloom. His 1980 album ‘Heartattack and Vine won him a spot in Australia’s top 40 charts, where he reached number 30.

In 1980, Tom Waits married Kathleen Brennan. Kathleen also worked as a singer, composer, record producer, and artist. The couple has been writing songs together since they were married. Tom and Kathleen wrote the majority of his songs that were released after 1992.
Tom Waits has established himself as a superb actor in addition to singing and songwriting. Tom Waits had been in approximately 40 films during the course of his more than a thirty-year career. Tom Waits made his acting debut in 1978. Initially, he played lesser characters who were later elevated to prominent positions.
