Chris Jones Gets a Controversial Penalty for Falling on Derek Carr!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The NFL has a problem, and it needs to figure out how to find the right balance quickly.

The league wants to make football safer for its players, and that should be the only rule it keeps. But important plays where rule changes and interpretations affect game situations and maybe even the outcome are not getting the reviews they need to protect the integrity of the game and the product on the field for everyone involved.

When Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones fell on top of Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr right before halftime of their “Monday Night Football” game, he was called for roughing the passer.

Carr was getting ready to throw a pass when the ball slipped out of his hands and fell to the ground. Jones reached for the ball and caught it as he fell on top of Carr.

Because of the penalty, the Raiders were able to kick a field goal and go into halftime with a 20-10 lead. This made the Chiefs’ task harder, but they were able to win 30-29 on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

But the most important thing to take away from Monday’s game is that the NFL had another controversial moment during primetime that it needs to explain to its players and coaches, ticket-buying fans, and people watching at home.

Jones said after the game, when asked if he talked to head ref Carl Cheffers after the play, “There’s no need to explain.” “What am I going to say? What should I do? How can I avoid rolling on him? I’m 325 pounds, okay? How do you want me to help you?”

Cheffers said again after the game that the penalty was called because Jones fell on Carr with his whole body. Even though the ball is loose, Carr is still given the full protection that quarterbacks get when they are in the passing position. Neither did the league office in New York look at the play during the game.

“The fact that the ball went out and was then picked up by the defence doesn’t change how the quarterback is protected,” Cheffers said.
