Lowe’s is dangling a new springtime promotion: free Garden-to-Go project kits that can be picked up curbside.
Every week in April, for “SpringFest,” the North Carolina-based home improvement chain will give away different themed kits to families who register in advance. Registration starts April 1, a week before the first of four weekly giveaways. The drive-thru event is similar to what Lowe’s did with curbside trick-or-treating in October.
In past years, Lowe’s has held a “Spring Black Friday” sale, but amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been handling sales and events differently, said Marisa Thalberg, Lowe’s executive vice president, chief brand and marketing officer. “Spring just feels so metaphoric this year. Sort of this coming out of our winter, literally and figuratively,” Thalberg said in an interview with USA TODAY. “We’re already seeing that interest starting to really build quickly as the weather is starting to get warmer in different parts of the country.”
In addition to free gardening kits, Lowe’s says it’s offering deals, product demonstrations and a campaign called “Hometrip,” which offers advice on how to turn homes into “destinations.” A Lowe’s consumer survey of 2,000 homeowners conducted by Morning Consult found 90% of respondents who completed home improvement projects since March 2020 are planning to tackle another this spring. According to a recent report by Numerator, a data and tech company, growth in home improvement categories was more than double online, with a 10% increase, versus in-store purchases, which grew 4%.
Do-it-yourself home improvement projects have also become popular during the pandemic as people spend more time at home.
Registration for the free Garden-to-Go kits begins April 1 on Lowes.com for the first kit, which will be available for curbside pick-up on April 8. The “family-friendly activity kits” can be reserved on the website a week in advance, while supplies last.
Here is the weekly schedule of kits:
April 8: Lowe’s says this kit “is sponsored by Miracle-Gro” and includes recipes from cook and food stylist Amanda Frederickson.
April 15: Lowe’s Mystery Garden Pinata with mystery seed packets.
April 22: For Earth Day, Lowe’s will give out 500,000 tree saplings
April 29: “Lowe’s Butterfly Quest” helps families create a butterfly garden.
