He also knows that he won’t be able to work for much longer. Then, at the end of the episode, Richard passes the symbolic torch by giving Tess his stethoscope. Richard says, “I don’t need it anymore, but I really hope you do.”

A few weeks later, in the episode “Love of My Life,” Richard’s illness is brought up in the most unexpected way. During the episode, Richard and his wife, Catherine Fox, get ready for his talk at a medical conference in Los Angeles (Debbie Allen).

But here’s the thing: Catherine wasn’t real. She was just a dream. Richard says he has found a way to cure cancer in his presentation. Then, as he talks, everything starts to go wrong, and fans of Grey’s Anatomy know right away that something is wrong with Richard.

Back at Grey Sloan, where the doctors are watching the conference online, Catherine is worried that Richard is drunk. But it seems to be more than that. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) finally walks up to the stage to ask Richard for help.

At first, he tries to forget about her. Then, when Maggie tries to talk more, Richard doesn’t know that Maggie is his real daughter. He also tries to stop Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood), who comes to help his coworker, from coming down.

Hayes and Maggie get Richard off the stage at last. Maggie asks the audience to call an ambulance at the same time. She thinks that Richard is going to have a stroke. Everyone in Seattle loses their video.

Later, Richard is taken to the hospital with Maggie by his side. He sees her and asks her what’s wrong. “I don’t know,” Maggie says. Grey’s Anatomy fans scream as the episode ends.
