As expected, the final weeks have been filled with teasers, trailers, and TV spots that have introduced us to Natalie Portman as Mjolnir-wielding Jane Foster and Christian Bale as new MCU villain Gorr, the God Butcher.
Some of the promotional material and in-depth interviews may have been missed if you don’t frequently visit YouTube or follow Marvel Studios on Twitter.

Thor: Love and Thunder Cast
One thing about Thor 4 that won’t shock you: who takes center stage. Yep. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor in this installment. Valkyrie, the recently anointed queen of New Asgard, is there as well (Tessa Thompson). Fans of Loki will be sad to hear that Tom Hiddleston will not be coming back.

The actress Natalie Portman was brought out on stage for a shocking reveal at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. She was tipped to reprise her role as Jane Foster in the MCU, but this Jane Foster would be unlike any other.
The plot point that this Jane Foster will be The Mighty Thor comes directly from Jason Aaron’s legendary mid-2010s Thor run in the comics. Also recently, Portman shared the news that her on-screen persona would be battling cancer.
The comics give us a good idea of what to expect from Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor, so they’re a good place to start if you need a primer.
Since Russell Crowe has joined the cast and admitted to playing Zeus in the film, we can assume that any confrontation between the two thunder gods will result in a lot of lightning.
With the Success of Thor
Ragnarok, it is possible that other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, such as Matt Damon’s character from that film, will make a return. On Asgard, he portrayed an actor who portrayed Loki.
The film’s director, Taika Waititi, will also reprise his role as the villainous Korg. After his first appearance in Thor: Ragnarok and a cameo in the form of a Fortnite match against noobmaster69 in Avengers: Endgame, the rock star will make his third appearance in the film.
Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, will also be in the new Thor movie. Vin Diesel will play Groot, Karen Gillan will play Nebula, Dave Bautista will play Drax, and Pom Klementieff will play Mantis. We know Bradley Cooper is back because Rocket Raccoon is here as well. The Asgardians have returned to their mounts.
The Question Is: “Who Else?”
Possible Return of the Grandmaster: During the time that Hemsworth, Waititi, and Sam Neill (who will likely make a cameo as an actor playing Odin) were filming the Marvel movie in Australia, Jeff Goldblum was spotted there as well.
Melissa McCarthy was also spotted on set, playing an Asgardian version of Cate Blanchett’s Hela. Lena Headey, star of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” might also make an appearance…
Christian Bale is set to play Gorr the God Butcher, a key character in Jason Aaron’s run who is responsible for the deaths of gods and goddesses across time and space, and the sworn enemy of the Thors.
For Odin’s sake, he took on the role of Kratos in Marvel Comics. There don’t seem to be any downsides. Pictures from the set have given us our first look at Bale in costume, and he appears to be a dead ringer for the character. This villain has been further fleshed out in a LEGO set.
Not to mention, Waititi has high hopes for the character. His assessment of Christian Bale as “probably the best villain Marvel’s ever had” was shared with the Associated Press (opens in new tab).
Thor: Love and Thunder Story
Since the release of the film is approaching rapidly (in a little over three weeks! ), we would be very concerned if we did not have an official synopsis by now.
It says, “In the film, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) undertakes a quest unlike any he has ever undertaken before: the search for himself.” But his retirement is cut short by Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer on a mission to wipe out the gods.
Thor enlists the aid of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who, to Thor’s consternation, mysteriously wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.
In order to solve the puzzle of the God Butcher’s vengeance and put a stop to him before it’s too late, they set out on a perilous intergalactic journey together.
Some Marvel fans have speculated that Thor is dead as a result of the trippy trailers, while others have claimed that a certain character was removed from the film to protect their identity.
What Else Could You Possibly Hope for?
It’s expected to have an “Avengers 5” vibe, says The Hollywood Reporter (link opens in new tab). Chris Hemsworth has even called it “one of the best scripts he’s read in years.” Accurate? If you ask director Taika Waititi, however, it will be like Ragnarok on steroids.
Continuing his interview with Entertainment Tonight (opens in new tab), he said, “If you take Ragnarok — which I feel was a very big, outlandish, bombastic film — we’re trying to double down on everything we did with that and create something that’s more crazy, more fun, and even more of a big, big adventure.”
The director has also said the film “might be the best Marvel film ever,” which is a pretty bold statement.
Waititi also discussed the film with The Sydney Morning Herald (opens in new tab) and hinted that Thor 5 might not happen. Perhaps this, he mused, would be even more comical. “We’ve just scaled up everything that Ragnarok did for us.
I don’t know if we’ll make another movie like this, but if we don’t I feel like we exhausted every possible ridiculous idea, concept, gag, stunt, and character we had. For my part, I couldn’t be happier with it.
He later hinted to Wired that the movie is the “craziest” thing he’s ever done by saying, “What I wanted to do from the start was to ask, ‘What are people expecting the least from this franchise?'” Oh, I get it — a serious romance!
Waititi also confirmed in an Instagram Live video that Space Sharks and Korg will both be looking for love in Thor 4. To clarify, that’s not a typo. During the 2013 Thor comic series, the creatures made an appearance and acted as a formidable barrier to anyone who dared approach the planet where the villainous Gorr resided.
A secondary plot point involves Valkyrie’s search for a co-ruler of New Asgard. She rules. Thompson told ET that if the actress ever fails to find her queen, she will simply assume the roles of both.
It’s all conjecture at this point. But, as the saying goes, you have to guess to make money, and given how closely Love and Thunder seem to follow Jason Aaron’s run on Mighty Thor, it’s worth looking at what could still happen.
Jane Foster’s return likely means a few things, but for now, we’ll just have to file those away as possibilities. Thor, for one, is no longer qualified to use the hammer. How exactly that occurs, however, is a mystery. It is also possible that she is a native of another universe.
However, merchandise has shed light on heroism’s early days. The product description states, “Jane Foster, an astrophysicist, and Thor’s ex-girlfriend, was diagnosed with cancer, but after a trip to New Asgard, her outlook on life completely shifted.”
To combat both internal and external threats, she has been given Thor’s superpowers after being mysteriously transformed by the shards of Mjolnir, the hammer of the thunder god. She took up Mjolnir and became a godlike protector, ushering in a new age of heroes.
When the Mighty Thor faced the mighty Gorr, the God Butcher, he was aided by Valkyrie and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Gorr, who possessed godlike abilities, set out to destroy all other deities in the universe.
Jane Foster was involved in an epic struggle full of love and thunder as she fought cancer in her human form and Gorr in her godly form. Although that doesn’t reveal too much, it does sound awesome.
