Rick Barry was born and raised in Roselle Park, New Jersey, and attended Roselle Park High School before attending the University of Miami from 1962 to 1965.

However, even though the Miami Hurricanes were unable to make it to the NCAA Tournament during Rick’s time there, he still managed to lead the NCAA in points in 1964–65. Barry was picked second overall in the 1965 NBA Draft by the San Francisco Warriors.

With 25.7 points per game and 10.6 rebounds, Barry was selected to his first All-Star Game, and he was named Rookie of the Year. With 35.6 points per game and All-Star MVP honors, Rick had the best season of his career in 1992-93.

Even though Barry had a 40.8-point average in the six-game Finals series, the Warriors fell to the Philadelphia 76ers. It was a three-year agreement for $500,000 that Rick couldn’t refuse when Barry left San Francisco to join the Oakland Oaks of the American Basketball Association (ABA).

When he initially arrived in Oakland, San Francisco refused to let him play on the team, so he worked on the team’s radio station instead. Barry played only 35 games in the next season due to a serious ligament injury, but he still made the All-ABA First Team and was named to the All-ABA All-Star team.

Low attendance in Oakland led owner Pat Boone to re-locate the club; the Oaks were renamed the Caps and transferred to Washington, D.C. That choice didn’t sit well with Barry and he refused to play, but the ABA insisted on it. For the next two seasons, he was chosen to the All-Star Game in all of them.

A draught selection and $200,000 were exchanged by the Virginia Squires (previously the Washington Caps) for Barry in September 1970. The Nets made it to the 1972 ABA Finals thanks to Rick’s support, but they lost in six games to the Indiana Pacers.

Rick was released by the Nets in October of that year, and he returned to the Bay Area to play for the Golden State Warriors in November of that year. Another NBA All-Star Game invitation for Barry, who led the league in steals per game (2.9) and free-throw percentage (.904) in 1975.

The most significant thing is that Barry and the Warriors won the championship, while Rick was chosen MVP of the Finals. After two seasons in which he and Golden State made the playoffs, Barry signed with the Houston Rockets as a free agent at the conclusion of the 1978 season. Before retiring in 1980, he spent two years in the city.

The Golden State Warriors retired Barry’s #24 after he played professionally for 15 years, scoring 25,279 points (24.8 ppg), grabbing 6,863 rebounds (6.7 RPG), and dishing out 4,952 assists (4.9 APG). The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted Rick Barry in 2006.

While coaching collegiate basketball in the 1990s, Barry had minimal success and then worked as a CBS sports commentator and broadcaster until starting his own sports talk show in 2001 on KNBR-AM in San Francisco, which was televised nationally. In 2006, Rick quit the radio station.

There were three marriages in his personal life and four children with his first wife Pam (1965-81). All four of their children became professional basketball players. Rick has a son from his marriage to Lynn Barry, his third wife. The identity of the second wife remains a mystery.
