Richard Linklater’s Style of Directing
Linklater’s work was largely influenced by what he saw in the movie Raging Bull. It made me think that movies could be a way to say what I was thinking and hoping to say. At that time, I wasn’t an artist yet. At that time, I was feeling something, but Raging Bull made it boil.
Robert Bresson, Yasujir Ozu, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Eric Rohmer, Francois Truffaut, Josef von Sternberg, and Carl Theodor Dreyer were also big influences on him.
Many of Linklater’s movies, like Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Tape, and all three parts of the Before Trilogy, take place in one day. They are less about the plot and more about how people get along with each other.
Many of his movies have starred Ethan Hawke and Matthew McConaughey. Jack Black, Julie Delpy, Ellar Coltrane, Blake Jenner, Adam Goldberg, Parker Posey, Glen Powell, Rory Cochrane, Greg Kinnear, Patricia Arquette, and Laurence Fishburne are some other actors who have been in more than one movie.
