Sheryl Lee Ralph (born December 30, 1955) is a singer and actress from the United States. She made her screen debut in the 1977 comedy film A Piece of the Action before landing her breakthrough role as Deena Jones in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls (1981), for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Ralph has appeared in a number of films throughout her career. She won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female in 1991 for her performance in the drama film To Sleep with Anger. Other films in which she has appeared include The Mighty Quinn (1989), The Distinguished Gentleman (1992), Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), and Deterrence (1999).

Ralph was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, the daughter of college professor Stanley Ralph and Jamaican fashion designer Ivy Ralph O.D., who invented the Kariba suit. Michael Ralph, an actor, and comedian is her younger brother. According to DNA testing, she is descended from the Tikar people of Cameroon. She grew up in Mandeville, Jamaica, and Long Island. In Uniondale, New York, Ralph attended Uniondale High School.
She appeared in a high school production of Oklahoma!, who plays Ado Annie. Sheryl received her diploma in 1972. She had previously been crowned Miss Black Teenage New York. Ralph was the youngest woman to graduate from Rutgers University at the age of 19; while at Rutgers, she was one of the first recipients of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival’s Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. Glamour magazine also named her one of the top ten college women in America that year.

She originally planned to study medicine, but after handling cadavers in a pre-med class and winning a scholarship at the American College Theater Festival, she decided to pursue the performing arts instead. Many years later, she was the Rutgers Class of 2003 commencement speaker.
