Jay-Z, formally known as Shawn Corey Carter (born December 4, 1969), is an American rapper, record executive, and media proprietor. He is regarded as one of hip hop’s influential artists. He was the chief executive officer of Def Jam Recordings and was instrumental in the creative and commercial success of artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna, and J. Cole.
Jay-Z, who was born and raised in New York City, began his musical career in the late 1980s. In 1995, he co-founded the record company Roc-A-Fella Records, and in 1996, he released his debut studio album, Reasonable Doubt.
