In 1968, Peter Guber entered the film industry, first as an assistant and then as a management trainee at Columbia Pictures, where he would eventually rise to the position of President.
In 1976, he co-chaired Casablanca Records and Filmworks, Inc., which was home to some of the most successful recording artists of all time and soundtracks to blockbuster films like Flashdance and Endless Love.
The Deep was his first film to be produced under his own name, and it ended up being the year’s second highest-grossing movie. In addition to his role at Sony Pictures, he was also CEO of Polygram. He has also written several bestsellers and is a co-owner of two professional sports teams in addition to producing multiple award-winning films.
In addition to teaching at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, Television, and Digital Media, he frequently serves as a keynote speaker at conferences for various international organizations. As of right now, he is the head of Mandalay Entertainment and the chairman of the board.
Peter Guber’s birthdate is 3/1/42 in Boston, MA. He attended Syracuse University after finishing high school. He met his future wife, Tara, while attending Syracuse. The year 1964 marks the year of their wedding.

Following his time at Syracuse, Guber pursued a legal education at New York University. Close to his graduation date, he took a management trainee position at Columbia Pictures.
While at Columbia, Peter implemented a state-of-the-art computerized filing and tracking system, completely replacing the previous manual process. Soon after, he was put in charge of all production in the United States.
He was made vice president of international production in 1973. While still a young man, he was quickly promoted to the position of vice president at the tender age of 26. Guber oversaw the production of several critically acclaimed films during his tenure at Columbia, including “Shampoo,” “Taxi Driver,” and “The Way We Were.”
At least some of “Shampoo” came from Gubers’ experiences with Jon Peters, who would become a pivotal figure in his life.
As time went on, Peter decided to go it alone, so he left Columbia and started Filmworks. On his own, he made “The Deep” in 1977. Over $100 million was made from the film’s $9 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.
In 1976, Peter combined Filmworks with Neil Bogart’s Casablanca Records. Records by Kiss and Donna Summer were the most successful for Casablanca. The actor Bogart passed away in 1982.
Along with his fellow producer Jon Peters, Peter formed Polygram Productions in 1979. Caddyshack, An American Werewolf in London, Flashdance, and The Color Purple were all produced by the Guber-Peters partnership, which later became known as Guber-Peters Entertainment.

Peters and Guber then used this momentum to negotiate a record-breaking contract with Warner Brothers, which remains one of the most lucrative production deals in history.
In 1989, Jon and Peter’s “Batman” made over $400 million worldwide on a budget of only $35 million for Warner Brothers. As a result of their massive success, Warner Brothers extended a multimillion-dollar contract offer to Guber and Peters.
Sony Pictures came knocking shortly after the deal was signed and acquired Guber-Peters Entertainment for $50 million, making the two of them Co-Chairmen of the company. The only catch was that they still had a binding contract with Warner Bros.
Warner filed a $1 billion breach of contract lawsuit against the trio and Sony. Sony settled on a $500 million settlement with Warner Bros. to get out of their respective contracts. To that end, Sony Pictures has named Jon Peters and Peter Guber co-Chairmen. Before that point, neither of them had ever managed a studio of any significant size.
Peters and Guber, while at the helm of Sony, oversaw the production of a number of high-profile, high-budget films, many of which were box office bombs. Over the course of their tenure, Peters and Guber oversaw an $8 billion loss for Sony in production and other costs. In the mid-1990s, when Peter and Jon left Sony, they were rewarded with severance packages worth $30-50 million each.
