A Soweto native, Trevor Noah is a South African comedian, writer, actor, and TV host. One of the most popular satirical news shows in the United States is The Daily Show, hosted by Stephen Colbert.
Life in the Beginning
Trevor Noah was born on February 20th, 1984, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Life in South Africa under apartheid was challenging for the Noah family, as his father Robert was of Swiss descent while his mother Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah was of Xhosa ancestry and faced jail time as a result of her interracial marriage at the time of his birth (he wrote about his experiences growing up under apartheid in South Africa in his 2016 book “Born a Crime”).
As a Stand-up Comedian
A young Trevor Noah began his career in entertainment as a stand-up comedian. In 2002, when he was just 18, he appeared in a cameo role on an episode of the popular South African soap opera “Isidingo.”
As a result of this, he started his own youth-oriented radio show at the same time “Then from 2004 to 2006, he hosted an educational television series called “Run The Adventure.” “The Real Goboza” was Noah’s first television series in 2007, followed by “The Amazing Date” in 2008.
His job as a TV host was interspersed with appearances as a participant on “Strictly Come Dancing,” where he appeared in the fourth season. The South African Film and Television Awards he hosted in 2009, the South African Music Awards he co-hosted in 2009 and 2010, and finally his own TV show, “Tonight with Trevor Noah,” were some of his other notable accomplishments.
It wasn’t long before he began to land lucrative endorsement deals, such as when he became the face and voice of South African cellphone service Cell C in 2010. As a stand-up comic, Paul Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, and Russell Peters have all shared the stage with him throughout his career.
For the first time ever, Noah made history as the first South African stand-up comedian to perform on “The Tonight Show.” The following year, he performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” where he repeated his achievement.
A documentary about him was released in 2012 called “You Laugh But It’s True,” and he made his first appearance as a contributor to “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” at the end of 2014. His MTV Africa Music Award candidacy for Personality of the Year in the same year earned him a nomination for the award.
Trevor Noah was named the new host of “The Daily Show” on March 30, 2015, replacing Jon Stewart. Many honors and nominations have followed after he took charge, including a 2017 Primetime Emmy nomination for his performance on the show.
With Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. of the Daily Show, Noah has developed “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” and “Klepper” on Comedy Central and executive produced yet another show called “Jefferson County: Probation” on HBO.
To match his status as one of the most well-known late-night talk show hosts, he’s also started appearing in films and television, most recently in the 2017 episodes of “Nashville,” as well as “Black Panther” and “American Vandal.” “the year after that.

After his mother was shot in the head by her ex-husband, Ngisaveni Abel Shingange, who Noah claims threatened him after he phoned him on the phone to confront him about what he had done, he made the voyage from South Africa to the US.
Since Noah’s mother unexpectedly survived the shooting, Shingange was convicted of attempted murder in 2011 for the shooting.
He has stated that he hopes that the incident would bring attention to the subject of domestic violence in South Africa and the absence of law enforcement reaction to it “For many years, my mother sought assistance from the police in dealing with domestic violence, but nothing ever came of her efforts. In South Africa, this is how things are done. Cases were never heard in court because dockets were lost.”
The purchase of a property in the Bel-Air region of Los Angeles by Trevor Noah made news in January of this year. The 10,044-square-foot, two-story residence, which includes five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, cost Noah a reputed $20 million.
2,200 square feet is the total area of the main master suite, and the property has a 500-gallon saltwater tank as well as an infinity-edge swimming pool and a private movie theatre. There is an “ultra-exclusive VIP suite” with its own secret entrance for exceptionally special guests that may come to see Noah in Bel-Air.
