Spider-Man star Tom Holland is one of the most popular MCU stars right now among the fans. Despite the fact, the actor who portrays the role of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was certainly Sony’s last choice for the role.
The third and certainly the most famous Spider-Man film of the history of the character. Sony dropped the first trailer for the Marvel film a few days back, and ever since, it has been trending all over the internet. The trailer broke Avengers: Endgame’s record of the most-watched MCU trailer in 24 hours. Avengers: Endgame was the biggest Marvel movie of the decade, and the new Spider-Man movie has certainly matched the hype of the film that broke box office records and dethroned James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest-earning movie ever.
With this under context, we can say that Spider-Man has the uttermost hype ever, and Sony certainly owes this to the leading actor Tom Holland. The ironic part of the story is that Sony never wanted to cast Tom Holland as the next Spider-Man.
But Marvel Was Immediately Convinced
Marvel holds a strict casting process to get the perfect actors for its characters. The casting process for Spider-Man was a real ordeal for everyone who tried to get their hands on the role. We cannot deny that Spider-Man is one of the most valuable for Sony and Marvel. According to Tom Holland, the casting process for Spider-Man dragged on for more than seven months. Holland auditioned six times for the role in this period. On the other hand, MCU boss Kevin Feige was immediately enthusiastic about the actor.
“He’s amazing!” he said once during a conversation with Fandango. Moreover, Joe and Anthony Russo were convinced that Tom is the perfect person to step into the Spider-Man suit. “This is our man. You will love him,” the directors said to Sarah Finn, the casting director at Marvel.
Sony Was Not Convinced
On the other hand, Sony was not on the same page with Marvel on this. Sony was much more skeptical about Holland. After all, he was a teenager who was to be at least compared with Tobey Mcguire and Andrew Garfield. Sony was a little afraid to put all the stakes into the hands of an actor who didn’t have much experience. There was also a dispute between Sony and Marvel on commitment regarding Holland for the role. But, in the end, Marvel convinced Sony to believe in the actor, and the rest is history.
