About Sasaki and Miyano
Sasaki and Miyano (, Sasaki to Miyano) is a Japanese manga series by Sh Harusono. Since 2016, each chapter has been posted online at the pixiv Comic site. It has been put together by Media Factory in nine tankobon volumes. Between October 2018 and March 2020, Media Factory put out a two-volume novel adaptation by Kotoko Hachij.
Since March 2019, Hirano and Kagiura (, “Hirano to Kagiura”), a spin-off manga by Harusono, has been published in Media Factory’s shojo manga magazine Monthly Comic Gene. It has been collected into two tankobon volumes.
In Sasaki and Miyano, the story is about two male high school students whose friendship slowly turns into love. Studio Deen made an anime version of the show that aired from January to March 2022. In February 2023, an anime movie will open in Japan.
Characters of Sasaki and Miyano
A first-year student who is short and Asian. Even though he likes girls, he calls himself a fudanshi, or a male fan of yaoi manga, and he keeps an eye out for tropes of the genre when they show up in his real life. Most people don’t know about his hobby because it makes him feel bad, but he’s happy to talk about it with Sasaki.
At the beginning of the story, he and Miyano become friends. Even though he is usually friendly and open to others, he has a bad reputation because of how he looks and acts.
He shows his feelings more than Miyano does, and he is the first to notice that he likes him. He and Miyano eventually start going out together.
A student in Sasaki’s class who knows both him and Miyano. Since he is a year older than Miyano, he has a strong need to protect him.
Sasaki and Miyano Manga
Sh Harusono writes and draws the books in the series. Since 2016, it has been posted in parts on the pixiv Comic website. It has been put together by Media Factory in nine tankobon volumes. Yen Press has the right to sell manga in North America. Yen Press also has the North American rights to the spin-off manga Hirano and Kagiura.
Sasaki and Miyano Anime
The release date of the anime is November 20, 2020. The adaptation, which was later revealed to be a TV show, is animated by Studio Deen and directed by Shinji Ishihira. Yoshiko Nakamura is in charge of the series’ composition, Maki Fujii is in charge of the characters’ designs, and Kana Shibue is in charge of the music.
The show aired on Tokyo MX and other networks from January 10 to March 28, 2022. Miracle Chimpanzee’s “Mabataki” (Blink) is the opening theme song, and Yusuke Shirai and Soma Saito, as their characters, sing “Ichigo Sunset” (Strawberry Sunset) as the ending theme.
Outside of Asia, the show was licensed to Funimation. Southeast Asia has given the show a license to Medialink, and fans can watch it on Ani-One Asia, YouTube, iQiyi, Bilibili, etc. On July 27, 2022, the ninth volume of the manga came out with an OVA episode.
After the last episode, it was announced that a new anime project would be made based on the series. It turned out to be an anime movie called Sasaki and Miyano: Sotsugy-hen.
The main cast and crew from the anime series came back to work on it. It will start in Japan on February 17, 2023, along with a short anime based on the spin-off manga about Hirano and Kagiura.
Notes on Sasaki and Miyano
- Advertised as a “Boys Life” (, Danshi kokosei seikatsu) series, Sasaki and Miyano is not a real “Boys Love” (yaoi) series, but the publishing industry has accepted it as one.
- Tokyo MX says the first episode will air at 24:30 on January 9, 2022, which is 12:30 a.m. on January 10 in Japan Standard Time.
- Each episode comes out on U-NEXT every Monday at midnight JST, 30 minutes before it airs on Tokyo MX.
