Warrior debuted on our screens only a few years ago in 2019, but its roots can be traced back decades. Bruce Lee, the martial arts film messiah, came up with the story for what would become Warrior over a half-century ago.
Shannon Lee, Bruce Lee’s daughter, worked tirelessly to realize her father’s dream. Warrior, on the other hand, had its share of ups and downs. So far, Warrior has had two seasons, the first of which aired in 2019 and the second in late 2020.
Since then, the show’s fate has been unknown, owing to the fact that parent company WarnerMedia ceased all-original programming on Cinemax, where Warrior originally aired, early last summer. This left the show without a home, resulting in all of its uncertainty.
However, the show’s two seasons began streaming on HBO Max on January 1, 2021. This resulted in a massive success for the show, as it found an even larger audience thanks to the streaming giant’s large number of subscribers.
While Lee and Tropper couldn’t say how many people watched Warrior after it moved to HBO Max, they know that it performed significantly better than it did on Cinemax. The show surpassed Game of Thrones in the “Popular TV” section of the streaming platform.
Shannon Lee credited HBO Max for “understanding the importance of telling this story” when the show’s renewal was announced in an April 14th press release. While it’s still too early to know all the details about the show, here’s what we know so far about Warrior season 3 and what you can expect.
Season 3: Possible Storyline
The second season ended with Zing escaping from prison, so the story will most likely continue in the upcoming season. More bloodshed is one thing we can count on in the upcoming season.

Ah, Sahm will be cast out as the actor Long Zi chief’s brother, and if any of the other soldiers get to know him, they will end up causing problems in the Hop Wei.
Furthermore, we’ve seen Young Jun struggle with his responsibilities as the new Hop Wei leader, making Ah Co more important than ever, especially since the latter has become an icon in the entire Chinatown community.
Mai Ling is also looking for blood. Her allegiance to the corrupt acting Mayor Buckley – she’s been blackmailing him about his past as an allied soldier – will almost certainly lead to another street brawl in Chinatown.
However, all of this is based on assumptions based on what we saw in the season 2 finale. When asked about what they could reveal about the upcoming season, Trooper told Inverse:
Since the renewal of Warrior’s third season was announced only a few weeks ago, little information about who will return for the series’ next season has been formally confirmed.
That said, there is a level of passion for this show shared by many of the cast members and producers, as evidenced by the overwhelming public support the show received for its renewal before it was officially announced.
In the same interview with Inverse, Jonathan Tropper was asked if any of the Warrior cast members would return for the third season. “Confirming means a deal is done, and HBO is in the process of doing those,” he continued. I can say that we are working hard to bring everyone back, and we are confident that we will succeed.”
Assuming that all of the show’s key players return for season 3, it is safe to assume that Andrew Koji will reprise his role as Ah Sahm. Koji is the central character of the show and plays a martial artist.
Dianna Doan, who played Mai Ling in the first two seasons, is also expected to return. Aside from these two, we’ll see Olivia Cheng, who plays brothel madam Ah Toy, and Jason Tobin, who plays the newly appointed Hop Wei Tong chief Young Jun.
Shannon Lee revealed plans to appear on the show in a cameo role in what was then a possible third season in an interview with Pop Culture.
Lee is a cross-disciplinary student of Kickboxing, Wushu, and Taekwondo who follows in the footsteps of her late father Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do martial arts ideology. It will be thrilling to see Shannon Lee demonstrate her real-life fighting skills on the show.
When Will the Third Season of Warrior Be Released?
Justin Lin, director of multiple Fast & Furious films and producer of Warrior, was among the first to express optimism for a third season. Lin stated that the Warrior creative team had “a lot more stories to tell.
“Chen Tang, who played Yao in the live-action Mulan adaptation and joined Warrior Season 2 as Hong, later stated in an interview that the show’s producers had originally planned for four or five seasons.
He, too, was among those who publicly hoped for at least one more season following the show’s cancellation. Change is unavoidable. Meanwhile, the org petition for a new season received over 65,000 signatures prior to Season 3’s confirmation.
Finally, in April 2021, HBO Max posted a video to its Twitter account in which members of the Warrior cast confirmed that the series will return for more.
Since then, HBO has yet to announce a premiere date, so given the relative lack of news — which could be complicated by the ongoing pandemic — Season 3 is unlikely to premiere until late 2022, if at all, or even some time in 2023.
