Today Margot Robbie is one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry, and her popularity continues to grow. But in 2015, the situation was still very different.
Although she had already worked with Martin Scorsese on “The Wolf of Wall Street,” she still did not have a big starring role in Hollywood. For this reason, when the opportunity came to audition for “Focus,” the Australian actress did not hesitate twice and lived a true odyssey. However, when she reached his destination, she got the worst impression of her co-star, Will Smith.
In a past interview with Entertainment Weekly, Margot Robbie recalled that she had been backpacking in Croatia with her brother and, upon learning of the job opportunity, ended up having the “craziest 24 hours of her life”.
“I was soaked because I had been swimming. I returned to the hostel at 6 in the morning. Without sleep, I turned on my phone, and it had the message: ‘They want you to do a test for Focus. Your flight leaves tonight,'” recalled the Oscar nominee.
First, Margot Robbie packed things up in record time and raced to a catamaran. Second, she had to take a bus to an airport to wait six hours for the plane.
After her flight, she waited six hours to get on another plane, and her luggage was lost. She only had wet clothes and shoes, in addition to presenting herself face washed since she had not even rescued her makeup. However, she made it to the audition on time.
But Will Smith proved to be a hopeless case. “He comes in and says, ‘Sorry I’m late, I was coming from Queens,'” Robbie said. “And I looked at him and said, ‘Yeah? Well, I just came from an island in Croatia, and I’m here on time,'” she added, before mentioning that her co-star was acting like a complete “asshole.”
The actress eventually stuck with the role and then reflected, “When they hired me for ‘Focus,’ they said they liked my audition. So I got the job because I looked like trash and called Will Smith a jerk? It turned out okay. I guess.”
Margot Robbie And Will Smith Would End Up Being Great Companions
While “Focus” is not one of Margot Robbie’s most memorable films, it was a box office success, grossing more than $158 million against a budget of $ 50 million. This movie also wouldn’t be the last time Robbie and Smith shared a screen. A year later, the actors would debut in “Suicide Squad” as Harley Quinn and Deathstroke, respectively.
