Because The Matrix Resurrections plainly indicates a return to the Matrix, The Matrix 5 might very well happen.
The much anticipated fourth picture reintroduces Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as their iconic characters Neo and Trinity, bringing yet another mind-bending trip that could only come from Lana Wachowski’s brilliance.
Resurrections not only mocks the present trend of reboots and franchises, but it also teases what might come next. Nothing regarding The Matrix 5 has been verified, but let’s take a look at what we do know so far about a hypothetical sequel.
The Matrix Resurrections contain spoilers.
The Matrix 5 Release Date
As previously said, no confirmation has been given as to whether or not The Matrix 5 will be produced, hence no release date has been assigned.
The two sequels were shot back-to-back from March 2001 to August 2002, following the release of The Matrix in 1999. In May and November of 2003, Revolutions and Reloaded were released in theatres.
We’re not implying that another trilogy is in the works, but it does suggest that if we do get a sequel, we won’t have to wait long. At the very least, not for another 18 years.
The Matrix 5 Cast
We’ll need to go through some Matrix Resurrections spoilers to figure out who might return in a possible fifth film, so don’t scroll past the photo if you haven’t seen it yet.
Neo and Trinity survived the events of Resurrections, unlike in Revolutions, hence Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would return.
While Reeves isn’t ready to confirm a new film, he did indicate he’d be up for it if Lana Wachowski wanted him to: “If she wanted to do another tale and wanted to include me, I would be honoured and appreciative, and I’d like to know what happens to Trinity and Neo, and the world.”
“Of course, fully,” Moss continued. It would be fantastic.”
As a result, we may anticipate to see Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Morpheus, Jessica Henwick’s Bugs, Jonathan Groff’s Smith, and Neil Patrick Harris’s Analyst reappear in Resurrections.
“I’d like to see where Sati’s character goes and whether or not she finds her higher purpose,” Priyanka Chopra’s Jonas has already hinted at Sati’s prospective reappearance in a future film.
“The fourth picture included the return of Niobe, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lambert Wilson’s The Merovingian, played by Lambert Wilson. Both characters could resurface in a future film, but given that the trilogy was published 60 years ago, it’s unlikely that we’ll see them again.
Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus is absent from Resurrections, but Niobe claims he died when Zion was destroyed. This isn’t to say that flashback sequences aren’t possible, but we think they’re unlikely.
Berg (Brian J Smith) and Lexy (Eréndira Ibarra), both crew members aboard Bugs’ spacecraft, are two other Resurrections characters who could return.
The Matrix 5 Plot
The majority of The Matrix Resurrections focuses on Neo fleeing the Matrix’s next form.
After they have been reunited in the real world, he achieves the emotional climax, and the last scene finds them returning to the Matrix to confront The Analyst, the architect of this new version of the Matrix.
The Analyst mocks them by proclaiming that the “sheeple aren’t going anywhere,” but Trinity assures him that they are going to recreate the Matrix after unleashing her wrath on him (including knocking his jaw off).
A fifth film will almost certainly focus on their efforts to change the Matrix from within, despite the fact that they will almost certainly face opposition from The Analyst, who will not simply allow them to adapt their ideal world.
Smith is still somewhere out there, and despite the fact that he helped Neo save Trinity, you can never trust Smith, so anticipate him to cause trouble in the future.
It’s clear that he’s still in touch with Neo, as he was in the first trilogy, but it’s uncertain what Smith will do now that he’s been’reawakened.’ Maybe he’ll prove to be a valuable ally? Almost certainly not.
It will also be fascinating to see how The One’s reappearance impacts IO, a city where humans and machines cohabit. Niobe was worried that Neo’s homecoming would have an adverse effect on IO’s future, disturbing the delicate equilibrium of the city.
Is it possible that Niobe will strike back against Neo in a future film? It’s unlikely, but you can always expect the unexpected from a Matrix movie.
