Production of Die Hard 4

Following the success of Die Hard With a Vengeance, and after extensive conversations with Bruce Willis, 20th Century Fox began development on the fourth Die Hard film. As they had done with the previous three films’ original scripts, Fox and Willis chose a story that was not written as a Die Hard picture and then had it transformed into the following sequel.Die Hard 4 Cast

In 1997, they acquired Tears of the Sun, an action-adventure penned by Alan B. McElroy that Willis loved and planned to convert into Die Hard 4. The plot revolved around a group of people who set out to establish a radio relay station deep within the Amazon jungle; due to a terrible storm, they land in a small mining town and hire a guide.

They are quickly apprehended by a drug lord and his gang, who compel them to work as slaves in his mine. They flee and must survive the jungle as well as drug traffickers who are after them.

Tears of the Sun has been in development since the early 1990s before Fox chose to rewrite it into Die Hard 4. It was one of several projects to which John Woo was linked as a director but which were never completed.

Other writers who contributed to the Tears of the Sun script over the years were Ronald Bass, Chris Gerolmo, Larry Ferguson, Robert Mark Kamen, and Joel Gross. It was also considered to be rewritten into a fresh modern Tarzan adaption before Fox acquired the script.

Interestingly, one of the original rejected ideas for the third Die Hard film, penned by John Milius, was set in the jungle as well. The Tears of the Sun version of Die Hard 4 was never made, as was the Tears of the Sun script.
