The long-awaited Super Mario Bros. Movie is almost here! The animated film, starring Chris Pratt as Mario, will be the first cinematic version of the acclaimed video game series since 1993’s live-action Super Mario Bros. film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, respectively. Hopefully, the new version from Illumination Studios will outperform that one.
There’s a lot we already know about the Super Mario Bros. Movie – a release date has been announced, we know who’s directing, and we have a trailer that gives us a hint about the plot. Scroll down to find out all we know so far about the upcoming Mario film.
The Super Mario Bros Release Date
According to Collider, The Super Mario Bros film will be released in the United States on April 7, 2023. The film will then be released in Japan on April 28, 2023, at the end of the month.
The new Mario film was supposed to be released at the end of 2022. However, due to difficulties in the development process, the film’s release date was pushed back.
What is the Plot of the Super Mario Bros Film?
The Super Mario Bros video games have usually portrayed Mario on a quest to rescue his beloved Princess Peach from Bowser’s castle after she is kidnapped, however, Illumination could take this in any route with over 30 years of games and multiple spin-offs to pull from.
We do know that, unlike the 1992 live-action effort, which was set in New York City, this adaptation will be set in Mario’s fictional home of the Mushroom Kingdom, which appears to have been authentically recreated from the games.
The teaser trailer shows Bowser and his army of Koopas attacking a penguin kingdom, which seemed to set up the film’s primary conflict. We didn’t see much of Mario, but the teaser suggests that this will be his origin narrative, as he emerges from a warp conduit into the Mushroom Kingdom, where he meets Toad for the first time.
According to Popverse, Jack Black told fans at New York Comic-Con that Bowser “has a musical side” in the film, however, it is unknown if the King Koopa will have a full-fledged musical number.
“I did bring some of my heavy metal backgrounds since Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rockstar,” Black explained. “You know, a huge, strong, and frightening rock star.” I also did a little rocking. You might be surprised to learn that Bowser has a musical side.
“I’m thinking of taking it to Broadway after the film comes out.” A one-man show is possible.”
The Cast of the Super Mario Bros Movie
The Super Mario Bros Movie cast was revealed during a Nintendo Direct in September 2021, sending the internet into a frenzy. The major news, of course, was the choice to use celebrity voice actors rather than video game actors, with Chris Pratt starring as the titular character Mario.
He’ll be joined by Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as Mario’s brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy from Peaky Blinders as Princess Peach, Jack Black from Jumanji as the nefarious Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Seth Rogen will also play Donkey Kong, the famed gorilla.
Some fans were disappointed that long-time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will not be reprising his role. Martinet, on the other hand, will feature in the film in an unspecified cameo role.
Here is the complete cast list:
- Mario is played by Chris Pratt
- Princess Peach is played by Anya Taylor-Joy
- Luigi is played by Charlie Day
- Bowser is played by Jack Black
- Toad is played by Keegan-Michael Key
- Donkey Kong is played by Seth Rogen
- Cranky Kong is played by Fred Armisen
- Foreman Spike is played by Sebastian Maniscalco
- Kevin Kamek is played by Michael Richardson
Is There a Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer?
The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s first teaser trailer was revealed on October 6, 2022, at the film’s panel at New York Comic Con. The trailer introduces us to Jack Black’s version of Bowser, as he and his army of Koopas invade an icy kingdom ruled by Penguins in search of the invincibility star (an item many both rapid Mario fans and casual MarioKart players will know).
The trailer then switches to Chris Pratt’s Mario landing for the first time in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad, who leads him to Peach’s castle as they bounce around mushrooms.
The teaser concludes with Charlie Day’s Luigi being pursued by a swarm of Dry Bones and seeking safety in an eerie-looking home, Luigi’s Mansion, anyone? Unfortunately, the teaser doesn’t go much farther, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to see and hear Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong or Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
