The upcoming supernatural horror comedy Haunted Mansion was written by Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien. It stars Rosario Dawson, Lakeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Jared Leto, Danny DeVito, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The film was made by Walt Disney Pictures and is the second movie to be based on Walt Disney’s same-named theme park ride. The first one came out in 2003. Haunted Mansion is set to come out on March 10, 2023, in the United States.
What Happens in the Story of the Haunted Mansion Movie?
“In this mysterious adventure, a doctor (Dawson) and her 9-year-old son (Chase Dillon) move into a strangely cheap mansion in New Orleans to start a new life. They soon find out that the house is much more than they expected.
They call a priest (Wilson) because they are desperate for help. The priest, in turn, calls in a widowed scientist turned failed paranormal expert (Stanfield), a French Quarter psychic (Haddish), and a cranky historian (DeVito) to help.
The dark ride attraction, which opened in Disney parks in 1969 and is still going strong today, takes guests inside a scary, creepy manor with many supernatural scares. It also has more characters than a graveyard.” Hatbox Ghost, Madame Leota, The Phantom, and the Hitchhiking Ghosts are some of the most well-known characters.
Rob Minkoff was in charge of the 2003 movie The Haunted Mansion, which was the first time the ride was turned into a movie. Eddie Murphy was the main star of the movie. More recently, Guillermo del Toro was in talks to make a new movie out of the ride. Sadly, it never happened.

Writing of the Script
Taylor and producer Andrew Gunn decided not to use the Hill-Greenberg screenplay, but instead to write a new one from scratch. They hired staff writer David Berenbaum to write a script that used the original story and source material from the attraction and made it bigger.
Berenbaum spent months making small changes and tweaks to several story ideas. For example, the Mansion moved from upstate New York to upstate New Orleans, and the character who later became Jim Evers became a real estate agent instead of an attorney.
Berenbaum worked on the script for the next two years after he chose the story that would become the plot of the final product. After a lot of draughts and rewrites, the final draught was approved by studio executives.

In a D23 Exclusive Trailer, ‘The Haunted Mansion’ Presents a Bountiful Cast
Disney fans got their first glimpse at the macabre new trailer for The Haunted Mansion during D23, which was held not far from the actual Haunted Mansion attraction in Disneyland.
The film, directed by Justin Simien and written by Katie Dippold, follows a single mother named Gabbie, played by Rosario Dawson, who buys a strangely priced estate in New Orleans for herself and her kid. Of all, even in today’s property market, an extraordinarily affordable home implies it’s either the century’s fixer-upper or… it’s haunted.
It doesn’t take long for Gabbie to recognize that her time in New Orleans will not be easy. To deal with the mansion, she enlists the assistance of a priest portrayed by Owen Wilson, a psychic played by Tiffany Haddish, a historian played by Danny DeVito, and a paranormal expert played by Lakeith Stanfield.
We got our first glance inside the titular haunted mansion in the D23 trailer, and fans of the theme park experience will recognize a few familiar faces. From images of a missing spouse to recognizable ghosts and séance chambers, we are immediately brought back to the iconic, terrifying Disney ride.
According to the film, the mansion appeared fully built following a fire in 1788. To name a few disasters, there were paranormal attacks, explosions, and yellow fever. The house is full of hidden secrets, including an underground chamber that our heroes enter.
The gathering of people exploring the house reminds me of the game Clue. While there are some eerie moments in the video, it mostly feels like a mystery with a dash of fun.
Development of Haunted Mansion Movie
In July 2010, it was announced that a remake of The Haunted Mansion was in the works for Walt Disney Pictures, with Guillermo del Toro serving as writer and producer. Del Toro indicated that the project would take place in a heightened reality rather than a real-world scenario.
He revealed that the Hatbox Ghost would be one of the primary characters in the film, which he described as “scary and enjoyable at the same time, but the scary will be scary.” Jason Surrell, a Walt Disney World Imagineer, joined the project as a creative consultant in June 2011.
Del Toro submitted the final copy of his script for a PG-13 rating to Walt Disney Studios in August 2012. Del Toro declared in July 2013 that he was no longer the project’s director, but remained a co-writer and producer.
Ryan Gosling was in early negotiations to star in the film in April 2015, and D.V. DeVincentis was hired to rework the script. Brigham Taylor was hired as an additional producer in September 2016.
Katie Dippold joined on to create a new screenplay for the picture in August 2020, after it was determined that del Toro’s original was too terrifying for family audiences. Producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich were hired.
Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback Entertainment will collaborate on the project. Justin Simien began early negotiations to direct the picture in April 2021 and was formally confirmed as director in July 2021.
