Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec based their supernatural drama on a series of books by L.J. Smith by the same name. The pilot aired in September 2009 and was the highest-rated show to start on The CW since it began in 2006. Because of how well it did, The Vampire Diaries ran for several years.

In 2016, Plec said that the show would end the following year. But even though the show ended after season 8, its popularity led to two spinoffs: The Originals and Legacies. The Originals had crossovers with several Vampire Diaries characters, like Stefan Salvatore.

The Vampire Diaries gave the typical coming-of-age stories for young adults a unique twist. Elena Gilbert and her friends had to learn to control their bloodthirsty urges, figure out how to use powerful magic, deal with a werewolf curse, and try to stay human and alive in a town full of monsters.

The love triangle between Elena (Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), and Stefan’s older brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), which ended with Elena choosing Damon, was a big reason why people liked the show.

When Dobrev left The Vampire Diaries after season 6, the show ran into a number of problems: falling ratings, creative burnout, and contracts that were about to end. All of these problems led to the end of the series after season 8.

Plec told THR that the future of The Vampire Diaries was still up in the air as season 8 began. But when it became clear that the story would be about the underworld of The Vampire Diaries, Plec thought the show was coming to an end. So, The Vampire Diaries ended on its own without being canceled, even though the news was a bit of a shock.
