The Banshees of Inisherin marks the reunion of Martin McDonagh, Colin Farrell, and Brendan Gleeson fourteen years after their last collaboration, 2008’s In Bruges. The black comedy drama centers on a breakup, but not of the romantic variety.
It focuses on two lifelong friends, Pádraic and Colm, whose friendship abruptly ends for unclear reasons (to Padraic). This fundamental shift in their relationship has serious repercussions for both parties, as well as for others in their life.
McDonagh is a renowned writer-director whose earlier works include Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and the Academy Award-winning short film Six Shooter. The Banshees of Inisherin is the first film by the Irish director in five years. Additionally, this is his first film set in Ireland.
The project is written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who also serves as a producer alongside Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin. Also starring in the film are Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.
If you like Seven Psychopaths or In Bruges, you should absolutely keep an eye out for this new McDonagh project. The film could be a contender for the 2023 Academy Awards if it is released in the autumn of 2022.

Who is in the cast of The Banshees of Inisherin?
The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two pals at odds, 14 years after they portrayed a pair of hitmen dispatched to Belgium to hide in In Bruges. Early indications point to a continuation of the pair’s previous success while working together.
In 2022, Farrell will star in the films After Yang, The Batman, and Thirteen Lives. The Banshees of Inisherin is the third time he has collaborated with McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths).
Gleeson has also been active recently, starring in The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, State of the Union in early 2022, and now The Banshees of Inisherin. Since In Bruges, Gleeson has not cooperated with McDonagh or Farrell, though he has worked a few times with Martin McDonagh’s brother, John Michael McDonagh.
Barry Keoghan (Eternals, Dunkirk) as Dominic Kearney and Kerry Condon (Better Call Saul, voice of FRIDAY in Avengers films) as Siobhan Silleabháin both star in The Banshees of Inisherin.
Martin McDonagh stated in February 2020 that he had signed a deal with Searchlight Pictures for his next directorial project, which would reunite him with his In Bruges co-stars Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon were added to the cast in August 2021.
Principal photography in Inishmore began in August 2021. Achill Island was also used for filming. Filming was completed on October 23, 2021.
What Is the Story of the Banshees of Inisherin?
The Banshees of Inisherin could be described as a friendship break-up story. It’s about a feud between two men who have known each other their entire lives. The irony is that you can never break up with a buddy, only distance yourself from them.
You can push them away as Colm does with Padraic. But what do you do when your friend refuses to leave you alone, as Padraic did? Set in the mythical island town of Inisherin during the Irish Civil War, Colm and Padraic reach an impasse when Colm decides to abandon his friendship with Padraic one morning.
Everyone in town, including Padraic’s sister, appears startled. And Padraic does not take this well, and continues to press Colm for answers, only to irritate him and make him angry. As Colm wants to move on and Padraic seeks to save their relationship, their desperation and damaged friendship have unexpected results.
Here’s Searchlight Pictures’ official synopsis.
“THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN” is set on a lonely island off the west coast of Ireland and follows lifelong friends Padraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who come to an impasse when Colm unexpectedly breaks their friendship.
A horrified Padraic attempts to mend the relationship with the help of his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and disturbed teenage islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), unable to accept no for an answer.
However, Padraic’s persistent efforts only serve to reinforce his erstwhile friend’s determination, and when Colm issues a desperate ultimatum, events quickly escalate, with shocking results.”
Trailer for The Banshees of Inisherin
The trailer for The Banshees of Inisherin, which will be published in August 2022, is rather bizarre. The video begins with a quarrel between Padraic and Colm, who are known to be lifelong friends.
They are so close that everyone in town is aware of their friendship, until they aren’t, much to Padraic’s amazement. However, the reason for this abrupt end is not explained, which preserves the plot’s intrigue. Whatever it is, this shift in their relationship appears to be bothering Padraic, as Colm continues to push him away.
The suspense is guaranteed to kill you, leaving you wondering “what precisely happened,” and there’s no way to find out unless you watch the movie. So let us just hope that the wait is worthwhile.
The plot of The Banshees of Inisherin is extremely intriguing. Despite being a drama-comedy, there is a constant sense of suspense and adrenaline, which is only enhanced by Ireland’s mysterious environment. The characters have an underlying tone of humor and quirky behavior, including some confrontational moments.
The rest of the storyline remains unknown, but it appears to be dramatic, placed in the foreground of the story’s combustible socio-political backdrop, all of which appears to be well balanced with the magnificent setting of the Irish countryside.
