Devotion is an upcoming American biographical war drama film directed by J. D. Dillard and written by Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart. The film is an adaptation of Adam Makos’s book Devotion:
An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice, which recounts the friendship of navy officers Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War. Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas, Nick Hargrove, Spencer Neville, and Thomas Sadaski are featured in the film.
The premiere of Devotion will take place at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2022, while the film’s release date is set for November 23, 2022.
What Does Devotion Mean?
The film “Devotion” is based on the same-titled nonfiction book by Adam Makos, which tells the story of Jesse Brown, the first Black U.S. Navy fighter pilot, and the odd friendship he builds with his wingman, Tom Hudner.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Brown and Hudner would become two of the Navy’s “most recognized wingmen,” but it would not come without cost for each pilot. The film will follow Brown and Hudner from their training with the elite VF-32 squadron through their perilous aerial fights in North Korea and eventually behind enemy lines.
Director, Staff, and More About Devotion
“Devotion” is being directed by J.D. Dillard from a script by Jake Crane and Jonathan A. H. Stewart. Glen Powell and Dillard serve as executive producers, with Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill serving as producers.
Dillard is arguably best known for the science fiction drama “Sleight” and the desert-island horror film “Sweetheart” starring Kiersey Clemons. Dillard’s decision to direct a historical drama may come as a surprise, given his background in genre films, but the project is more personal to him than any of his prior efforts. The fact that Dillard’s father was a military pilot ingrained in him a lifetime passion for flying.

“That’s not what it looks like, that’s not what they say, and that’s not what they do,” Dillard said to Deadline. For Dillard, “Devotion” was an opportunity “to also sort of convey my father’s story: even though he and Jesse were 40 years apart, the parallels were uncanny.”
Behind the camera, Dillard is joined by cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, who previously collaborated with David Fincher on “Gone Girl” and “Mank.” Michael FitzMaurice, an alumnus of “Top Gun: Maverick,” was hired for “Devotion’s” aerial cinematography, as the majority of the film’s action takes place in the air.

Black Label Media purchased the rights to Devotion in March 2018, and Glen Powell joined the cast as Tom Hunner. Jonathan Majors has been cast as Jesse Brown, and J. D. Dillard is poised to direct, according to an announcement made in December 2019.

Trailer and Plot Summary for Devotion
Late in May, the teaser trailer for “Devotion” came out, giving fans a taste of the high-stakes drama that will be in the movie. Here is the official summary of the movie:
The air war epic Devotion is based on the best-selling book of the same name. It tells the scary true story of two of the best fighter pilots in the US Navy during the Korean War. Because of what they did, they would become the most famous wingmen in the Navy.
Even though the story is based on real events, the summary doesn’t give away too much about what will happen to Brown and Hudner. The summary of Makos’s book gives those of us who are more curious a little more background:

Devotion tells the inspiring story of Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, two of the most famous aviators in the U.S. Navy, and the Marines they fought to protect. White and from a New England country club, Tom turned down Harvard to join the military and fly fighter planes.
Jesse, the son of a sharecropper in Mississippi, was the first black carrier pilot in the navy. He fought for a country that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar. While segregation kept a lot of people in America apart, Jesse and Tom joined Fighter Squadron 32 as wingmen.
Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these brave young pilots learn how to do the most dangerous job in the world—landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Jesse’s young wife, Daisy, has a hard time accepting this kind of work. Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines when they are sent to the Mediterranean. One of them is PFC “Red” Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills.
When they are not playing war games in the sun, the young men have fun on the Riviera, where they party with millionaires and even make friends with Elizabeth Taylor, who is a Hollywood starlet. Then, in faraway Korea, a war breaks out that no one saw coming.
Bottom Line
The upcoming movie Devotion is based on real-life events that were done by some of the Navy’s best pilots. The movie is set to come out on November 28, but there could be a chance that it won’t come out on time. The main character is played by Jonathan Majors, and the story is about two pilots. The movie’s official teaser has been made public.
