The Plot of Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

Mrs. Ada Harris, a widowed housekeeper in London in 1957, falls in love with an haute couture Dior dress that one of her clients is wearing. This makes her want to buy her Dior dress. After getting a war widow’s pension out of the blue, she goes on an adventure to Paris.

She walks into a show of Dior’s 10th-anniversary collection and meets André, the company’s accountant, and Natasha, one of the company’s models. But Claudine, who runs Dior, doesn’t like Ada coming into the exclusive world of haute couture.

Dior is having trouble paying its bills, but Ada is willing to pay cash, so they reluctantly agree to make a dress for her. While she stays in Paris for fittings, she stays with André and tries to get him to tell Natasha how he feels about her. Both of them are interested in existential philosophy, which is something they have in common.

When Claudine has to fire some of Dior’s workers because of money problems, Ada organizes a strike that forces Claudine and Christian Dior to listen to André’s ideas on modernizing the business and making it more profitable.

Ada takes her dress back to London. She gives it to Pamela, a struggling actress who is one of her clients. Pamela wears it to an event, where it catches on fire and is ruined. Her friends at Dior heard about the accident in the newspaper and sent her a dress she had wanted more than she had bought.
