The Plot of Father of the Bride

The renowned architect Billy Herrera and his wife Ingrid are Cuban-Americans in Miami. They have two children, Sofia, a recent law school graduate, and Cora, a rebellious wannabe fashion designer.

In couples counseling, Ingrid informs Billy that she has had enough of his workaholism and obstinacy and wants a divorce; their counselor advises them to notify their girls immediately. Sofia declares that she is engaged to fellow lawyer Adan Castillo and that they plan to marry in one month before Ingrid announces her engagement.

Billy and Ingrid agree to conceal their separation until after the wedding. And Billy feels concerned regarding Sofia’s wedding and her intention to travel to Mexico with Adan to work for a non-profit organization rather than remain in the United States.Father of the Bride

Billy desires a large, traditional Cuban wedding. However, Sofia and Adan choose a more intimate affair. Meanwhile, Sofia requests that Cora create her wedding gown and the outfits for her bridesmaids, which irritates their eccentric wedding planner Natalie Vance.

Hernan, the affluent father of Adan, and the rest of his family are arriving in Miami. Hernan and Billy continue to fight about the expense and scope of the wedding, and Hernan offends Billy by offering to pay for something he cannot afford. Instead, Hernan hosts a grandiose engagement party aboard his yacht.

Hernan has already acquired a beautiful estate on an island near Miami and offers to have the wedding there, provoking a yelling match between him and Billy, who expresses his hate for Adan and the Castillos. Billy appeases Sofia during her dress fitting and informs Adan of their impending divorce during the latter’s bachelor party.

A storm watch has been issued for the upcoming event. The families attend the wedding rehearsal, where Cora overhears Billy discussing his impending divorce with his cousin Junior and instantly informs the other guests.

Sofia is outraged that her parents and Adan have been concealing this information from her, but she reconciles with her father and agrees to proceed with the wedding. The Herrera family spends the night together on that stormy night.

The next day, the weather cleared, but the storm had wrecked the wedding venue’s sole bridge and a large portion of the decorations. The Herreras and Castillos pool their resources to arrange a last-minute wedding at the Herrera residence, officiated by Natalie. Billy ultimately consents to Sofia and Adan’s marriage while he and Ingrid revive their romance.

Review of ‘Father of the Bride’

There’s a lot of talk about tradition and breaking with the past in director Gaz Alazraki’s Father of the Bride, the third film adaptation of Edward Streeter’s 1949 novel of the same name. Andy Garcia plays Billy Herrera, who immigrated from Cuba early to work as an architect in Miami.

Throughout Father of the Bride, we watch Billy and other people forge ahead to forge a new path while yet embracing old customs. His structures have a traditional design that harkens back to the past. Billy frequently waxes nostalgic about his early days in Florida, marrying Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) in a bingo hall, and how far he’s come since then.

Similarly, Father of the Bride attempts to carve its route outside the previous two renditions of this story while simultaneously paying tribute to what has previously worked so effectively.

While Matt Lopez’s screenplay strives to do so, Father of the Bride learns the incorrect lessons from past renditions, resulting in an unnaturally sad version of this narrative that lacks the humor and heart needed. This transition is evident almost immediately in the opening scenes of Father of the Bride when Billy and Ingrid are fighting in marriage counseling.

However, Father of the Bride lacks the warmth and comedy that have made this a cherished narrative for decades. Garcia is exceptionally terrific in this role, combining charisma with love for his family and his daughter—who can transform him into a big ol’ teddy bear just by gazing at him.

However, for anyone anticipating Garcia to go full Spencer Tracy or Steve Martin in this part, the writing lacks the humor for which this narrative is known. Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman, a wedding planner attempting to channel the spirit of Martin Short’s Franck via a millennial lens, is one of the film’s widest attempts at humor.

Father of the Bride tries to tell this well-known story to appeal to a new generation and audience. Its intentions are good, but because it changes too much from past versions, it doesn’t have the same magic that those versions did.
