Critical Response for A.p. Bio Season 4

Based on 32 reviews, the first season has a score of 66% and an average rating of 6.34/10 on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The website’s critical consensus reads, “A.P. Bio has some genuine chuckles, but audiences have seen plenty of authoritative figures behaving badly, so they have every right to expect more from this promising idea and excellent cast.” Utilizing a weighted average, Metacritic gives the series a score of 59 out of 100 based on the opinions of 17 critics.

Daniel Fienberg, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, remarked that A.P. Bio has a strong cast, with the sole drawback being that it is not particularly humorous. The New York Times’ Margaret Lyons described A.P. Bio as “an aggressive sitcom that is not just unfunny but also deeply nasty.” Jen Chaney of Vulture opined that the series had a few shining moments but was “conceptually exhausted” overall.

After three seasons, viewers of this streaming series know what to anticipate from the fourth season of A.P. Bio, in the sense that no storyline is too bizarre or uncomfortable for the authors to find a way to make it humorous.

In the very first episode of the fourth season, a lockdown due to a tornado serves as the backdrop for a series of progressively awkward skits centred on the fanfiction the students are writing with the teachers as the main characters.

If this line makes you cringe, know that what follows is both better and worse than you could possibly imagine. The spirit with which the ensemble enters these narratives with full force is admirable and even frightening.

This type of humour, replete with absurdity and second-hand discomfort, has become a characteristic of the series, and the chuckles are almost always on target, even when viewers are cringing. It takes expertise to make someone so near to caricature while still being likeable.

In terms of emotional tone, however, there is something distinct about this season. There have previously been meaningful and poignant moments on A.P. Bio, but they have virtually always been juxtaposed with humorous ones. There are full scenes in season 4 that are not played for laughs. Several are so shocking that they deliver a gut-punch.

There are also wonderful moments, particularly in the final episode where Jack bonds with his students and helps Stef birth her baby. Here, there is a plenty of hilarity throughout, notably when Jack emerges drenched in blood. Yet these personalities have matured and gained our favour.

The sacrifice is that the balance is slightly off compared to previous seasons, but rest assured that this is still a sitcom in every way. The recurring themes and cliches, ranging from an accidently formed cult to a teen rom-com storyline (which is actually fascinating! ), are effective.
