What Is the Plot of Season 3 of ‘The Girlfriend Experience?

The third season of The Girlfriend Experience will investigate the complicated complexities of transactional relationships over the course of ten episodes. Anja Marquardt, the film’s writer and director, concedes that the new method will be “extremely devious and convoluted.”

In the upcoming season, the show will focus on Iris, a neuroscience major who works in the London tech industry for a startup. Iris decides to investigate the transactional realm of The Girlfriend Experience and rapidly discovers that client sessions give her a compelling advantage in the tech sector.

EW quotes Marquardt as saying, “Iris is very insightful, highly determined to decipher the human behaviour of her clients, and also rather brave.”

“She utilises her clients almost as a laboratory to harvest behavioural data. Obviously, I’m not permitted to reveal the end result at this time, but I can say that things are going to become quite wild.”

Who Is in Cast of Season 3 of ‘The Girlfriend Experience’?

Given the nature of the show and its regular one to two protagonists, viewers of The Girlfriend Experiment should anticipate a very small cast for this season.

Iris is portrayed by Julia Goldani Telles (The Affair, Slenderman) in season three of the series. We assume that Tobi Bamtefe (The Witcher) as Brett, Daniel Betts (The Liar) as Rupert, and Aidan Cheng (Harlots) as Maurus are all guys Iris meets during her time with TGE.

Although there is no connection between the plots and Kerrigan and Seimetz worked independently, they did read each other’s screenplays. Kerrigan stated in an interview with Variety, “We admired each other’s work, and I believe we have mutual respect as filmmakers, so we read each other’s screenplays and watched each other’s episodes, but we did our own thing.”

In September of 2017, Kerrigan and Seimetz announced they would not be returning for a third season. Kerrigan added, “Amy and I will leave after the second season, which was always the intention, to create room for new filmmakers.”

Reception or Reviews by Viewers

On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of The Girlfriend Experience has an approval rating of 85 percent with an average score of 8.5 out of 10 based on 40 reviews. The site’s critical consensus says, “Riley Keough’s breakout performance transcends The Girlfriend Experience’s flaws, elevating the film to binge-watch status.”

A score of 78 out of 100 from 27 critics on Metacritic indicates “generally good reviews.” Matt Zoller Seitz, writing for Vulture, lauded the series, stating that “The Girlfriend Experience is actually four or five shows rolled into one, and a big part of its specialness resides in those moments where it morphs from one thing to another”, as well as the season finale: “It is the most daring, dense, allusive, and multilayered single episode of television I’ve seen since the finale of Louie’s third season.”

The second season was met with favourable reviews from critics. It has a 74 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 9.4 out of 10 based on 19 reviews. According to the site’s critical consensus, “The Girlfriend Experience reinvents itself from a character study into an ensemble piece, methodically dissecting tricky facets of sexuality and providing demanding programming for viewers who want to be both challenged and titillated.”

It has a Metacritic score of 72 out of 100 based on six reviews.  Chris Cabin, writing for Collider, rated it four stars and called it “one of the best television seasons that 2017 has produced thus far.”

As a writer for Variety, Sonia Saraiya believed that while the second season was “still directed and produced beautifully, with a soundscape so precise and intimate that it is haunting and immersive in a way that little else on television is,” sex work and “even the sex worker herself” had become “secondary to the filmmaker’s goals,” especially in Erica & Anna, but that both plots had fine qualities: “A couple passages in ‘Bria’ will be difficult to forget in the near future.

‘Erica & Anna’ is a far simpler plot with a frigid style that makes ‘House of Cards‘ appear cheery. But the relative obscurity of ‘Bria’s story’s beats and the weirdly trite metaphors of ‘Erica & Anna’ left me wishing that these two well-matched directors would actually work together.”

The third season has garnered generally favourable reviews from critics. On the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, 56% of 9 reviewer reviews are positive, averaging 6.3/10.  It has a Metacritic score of 76 out of 100, based on 6 reviews.
