Benito Antonio Martnez Ocasio, better known by his stage name “Bad Bunny,” is a Puerto Rican singer and composer who helped popularise reggaeton and trap music. Other musical styles, such as punk rock and soul, were blended into his urban approach.
His stage name, “Bad Bunny,” was inspired by a picture he posted online of himself as an infant in a bunny costume and with a frown on his face. As he rose to prominence, he started tweeting under that persona. Bad Bunny studied audiovisual communication at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. He focused on his reggaeton and trap music projects at night. Reggae and Spanish rap fused together, the former deals with urban issues like drug usage and crime while the latter relies on electronic drum machines and cymbal synths to create an upbeat beat.
On SoundCloud, an international music sharing platform, Bad Bunny began releasing songs. “Diles” (“Tell Them”) by Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny was found by DJ Luian and signed to Hear This Music’s roster in 2016. The song “Soy peor” (I’m Worse) was a huge hit for Bad Bunny, making him an overnight sensation. In 2017 he released more singles, both on his own and with the help of other musicians. With Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Prince Royce in “Sensualidad” (“Sensuality”), the song was a standout at the Latin Grammys.
“I Like It” by Bad Bunny, Cardi B, and Balvin was released in 2018. The song, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, featured Bad Bunny rapping in both Spanish and English for the first time. Later that year, he collaborated with Drake on the song “Ma” (“Mine”), which climbed to number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. X 100PRE, an acronym for “forever,” was released by Bad Bunny at the end of 2018 as a result of his growing fame. An eclectic blend of pop punk, hip hop, electro, and dembow can be found on the album, which also includes “Ma” and 14 other tracks (a Jamaican musical rhythm).
It was in 2019 when Bad Bunny and Balvin collaborated on the album Oasis, which featured a mix of Latin, African, and other musical genres. Super Bowl halftime spectacle Bad Bunny performed in early February 2020. This album of party songs (YHLQMDLG), an acronym for “I do whatever I want,” was a critical and financial triumph later in the month. In the category of best Latin pop or urban album, Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG took home his first Grammy. El ltimo tour del mondo (“The Last World Tour”), his third solo album, will be released in late 2020. It was the first Billboard 200 number one debut for a Spanish-language album.
