X Files Season 8: Release Date, Trailer & Everything You Should Know in 2022!

The eighth season of the American science fiction television series The X-Files premiered on November 5, 2000, and concluded on May 20, 2001, with twenty-one episodes.

Season eight picks up after Fox Mulder’s (David Duchovny) alien abduction in season seven.

The season delves into various themes such as life, death, and faith. The Mulder story arc continues until the second half of the season, when a new arc about Dana Scully’s (Gillian Anderson) pregnancy begins. This arc would continue and conclude with the following season.

Duchovny chose to return only as an intermittent main character this season, appearing in only half of the episodes. Mulder was replaced by actor Robert Patrick, who played John Doggett.

The season also saw the debut of Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, who would go on to become a main character in the ninth season. Along with the cast change, series creator Chris Carter updated the opening credits, which had been unchanged since the first season.

Season eight was well received by critics but less so by fans, many of whom were disappointed that Duchovny’s role was reduced and Patrick took over as co-lead alongside Anderson.

The season’s ratings were initially strong, but it eventually averaged 13.53 million viewers, down from 14.2 million in the seventh season. Concurrent with the premiere of this season, Carter and The X-Files production team created and aired The Lone Gunmen, a short-lived spinoff.

Plot

Scully meets Special Agent John Doggett, the leader of an FBI task force formed to find Mulder. Even though the search is ultimately unsuccessful, Doggett is assigned to the X-Files and works with Scully to investigate several cases.

X Files Season 8

When Scully learns that several women have been abducted and impregnated with alien babies, she doubts her own pregnancy and worries about her unborn child. Shortly before Mulder’s body is discovered in a forest at night, Doggett introduces Scully to Monica Reyes, an FBI specialist in ritualistic crime.

Following Mulder’s funeral, Assistant Director Skinner is threatened by Alex Krycek with the death of Scully’s unborn child. Billy Miles, multiple abductees who went missing on the same night as Mulder, is returned dead, but he’s dead body appears to be resurrected and restored to full health.

Mulder also returns from the dead, with Scully watching over his recovery. Mulder, revitalized, investigates several X-Files cases against orders but soon quits the FBI and leaves Doggett in charge of the cases.

Mulder continues to offer advice in an unofficial capacity. Doggett is assigned a new partner while Scully is on maternity leave, an inexperienced agent who is obsessed with the X-Files, but the relationship is only temporary.

Mulder, Doggett, and Skinner reluctantly accept Krycek’s assistance after learning that an alien virus created in secret by members of the American government has replaced several humans, including Billy Miles and several high-ranking FBI personnel, with alien supersoldiers.

Krycek claims that the soldiers are virtually unstoppable aliens out to ensure that humans do not survive Earth’s colonization. They’ve discovered that Scully’s baby is a miraculously special child, and they’re afraid it might be greater than them.

They only recently discovered the significance of the baby, which is why Krycek told Skinner to kill the unborn child earlier. Mulder, Doggett, Skinner, and Krycek assist Scully in escaping with Special Agent Reyes, who drives her to a remote farm when Billy Miles arrives at the FBI Headquarters.

Scully gives birth to an apparently normal baby while the alien supersoldiers surround her shortly after Skinner murders Krycek. As Mulder arrives, the aliens leave the area without explanation. Mulder returns Scully and her newborn baby to her apartment while Doggett and Reyes report to FBI Headquarters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Mulder Wasn’t on the X-files in Season 8?

The producers found it difficult not only to write Duchovny’s character out of the script but also to explain Mulder’s absence if an upcoming season were to air. It was eventually decided that aliens would abduct the character.

In Which Episode Will Mulder Return for Season 8?

Scully has a nightmare about Mulder lying dead aboard the alien craft in 8×14 “This Is Not Happening!” only to discover at the end of the episode, when he is returned, that he is indeed dead. Mulder is now alive and recovering from his abduction and aftermath in 8×15 “Dead Alive” and 8×16 “Three Words.”

Does Mulder Return After Season 8?

Mulder disappears at the end of the season after Scully gives birth, and he does not reappear until the Season 9 finale. Duchovny only appeared in half of Season 8. While the season received mostly positive reviews, fans chastised the show for downplaying Mulder’s role.
