Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Release Date, Plot, Cast, Trailer and Everything!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finds Paramount expanding their Star Trek world once more. Other franchises include Star Trek: Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, and Prodigy, to mention a few. Following the success of Season 2 of Star Trek.

Strange New Worlds

Discovery and the popularity of a certain Captain Pike among Trekkies (though we believe actor Anson Mount’s jawline has more to do with it), the Star Trek studio eventually gave in to fan demand and greenlit this next spin-off. So, with weird new worlds on the horizon on television, it’s time to swat before settling down. Are you ready to learn everything we know? Take it.

The Storyline of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

While we expect Strange New Worlds to be a pretty gentle introduction to the Star Trek world for the uninitiated (unlike Picard, for example), there is some backstory to be aware of.

Captain Pike, the show’s primary character, was Star Trek’s very first captain, debuting in the year 2254 in a previously unseen pilot episode of The Original Series titled “The Cage” (the episode ended production in 1965 but was not viewed by viewers until 1986, through home video).

Pike (who had suffered a severe injury) reappeared midway through season 1 for a final double-bill appearance, with William Shatner’s renowned Captain James T. Kirk taking command. Shenanigans occur with fan favourite Lieutenant Spock, allowing Pike to live a pain-free existence on the planet Talos IV beginning in 2267.

What is the significance of this? Strange New Worlds takes place between Pike’s travels in Discovery’s second season, roughly 2257, and his final days in The Original Series, so there are a lot of territories to cover and little precedence, which we believe bodes well for some outside-the-borg-cube thinking.

Strange New Worlds

In terms of current storyline information, there isn’t much on the spatial distortions, subspace sandbars, and mysterious oddities our new crew will experience, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to be excited about.

Strange New Worlds co-creator Akiva Goldsman stated the series will be nearly entirely episodic (heads up The Next Generation and Voyager fans), with “room to meet new aliens, see new ships, and explore new societies.” What is the one item that will destabilise the episodic structure? Character development.

There are a few indications as to what to expect from the existing teaser material. The artwork and video depict Pike’s shift from his lovely home in the Mojave desert to the Enterprise’s bridge.

We know he’ll be aided by his two trusted subordinates from Discovery, Science Officer Spock and First Officer ‘Number One’ (actual name Una Chin-Riley).

Some classic legacy characters return as well, notably Nyota Uhura (famously played by Nichelle Nichols in The Original Series and Thandi Newton in the alternate timeline films of 2009, 2013, and 2016) and Nurse Chapel, who aided Dr McCoy in the sickbay in The Original Series.

We’re especially pleased to meet Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname will conjure up images of Ceti eels (picture hard-skinned killer leeches) and one of the finest space battles in Star Trek — arguably even sci-fi cinema — ever.

It remains to be revealed whether she is connected to Khan Noonien Singh, the show’s most notorious villain and a genetically-engineered superhuman (for the avoidance of doubt, we’re speaking to Khan in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, not the alternate timeline Khan of Star Trek Into Darkness).

The Cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn reprise their roles as Pike, Spock, and Number One from Discovery.

Nurse Christine Chapel is played by Jess Bush, Cadet Nyota Uhura is played by Celia Rose Gooding, and La’an Noonien-Singh is played by Christina Chong.

What Is the Best Way to Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

In the United States, Latin America, Australia, and the Nordics utilise Paramount+, whereas in Canada, use CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Crave. Outside of those regions, you’ll have to wait until Paramount+ opens in your area before you can watch the show. As previously stated, that date will be June 22 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but it may differ elsewhere.

If you don’t want to wait, there is a method to watch Paramount+ from the United Kingdom and other countries in the interim. It will require a VPN and some work, but it is definitely preferable to having the entire show spoiled for you by American fans.
