Only a Season One Recap of Murders in the Building
An Upper West Side apartment complex, the Arconia, serves as the backdrop for Only Murders in the Building. When their building’s fire alarm goes off, three true-crime fans — Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) — band together over their mutual infatuation with a recent podcast. It’s a fire alarm, or so they assume.
Upon their return, they discover that a young man called Tim Kono, with whom they had shared an elevator earlier in the day has been murdered. In order to investigate this mystery, these amateur sleuths have decided to establish their own podcast on true crime.
Charles, Oliver, and Mabel’s backstory are quickly revealed. Mabel and Tim Kono used to be friends, but their friendship soured after one of their colleagues died in a tragic accident on the roof of the building.
Charles, a former TV star, played a TV investigator. Oliver, a former Broadway producer, is down to his last dollar.
After a rocky start, the trio eventually succeeds in uncovering a trail of clues that leads them to Jan (Amy Ryan), Charles’ love interest and an oboist, and Oscar (Aaron Dominguez), an old friend of Mabel’s who was recently released from prison after being accused of the death of the latter.
Bunny and Uma, along with Detective Williams, are among those who aren’t happy about their antics, particularly Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell).
Only Homicides Committed Within the Structure Will Be Considered
Teddy Dimas is their new primary suspect after they get rid of the Sting idea. Theo (James Caverly), Teddy’s son, is revealed to be the assassin who killed Mabel’s buddy in the course of the investigation.
Teddy made threats against Tim Kono and Mabel if he reported what he observed. Before Teddy died, Tim appeared to have Teddy’s number. When Detective Williams put all the pieces together, he was able to apprehend Teddy Dimas and his kid.
Despite the fact that they believe they’ve cracked the case, Detective Williams reveals that she now has video footage of Dimas outside the building when the murder occurred, proving that they weren’t the perpetrators.
Upon finding an oboe cleaner in Tim’s flat, Mabel and Oliver decide that Jan must be the killer. When she senses that the trio is on her, Jan tries to kill Charles and the others, but she is foiled and caught by the police.
However, the three of them can bask in the glow of their first win for just a short time. When Charles and Oliver arrive at Mabel’s apartment, they find her bloodied and in front of a dead body— Bunny’s. Despite what she tells them, all three have been detained and are the primary suspects in a fresh murder investigation.
