Season 3 of The Chase features the inclusion of new Chasers, including former Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions winner and guest presenter Buzzy Cohen. Victoria Groce and Brandon Blackwell, both new Chasers, will join him.
They fill the void left by Ken Jennings and Mark Labbett, who concluded their seasons as Chasers in Season 2. Meanwhile, Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer are remaining around, creating an interesting dynamic as ABC’s version of The Chase adds another Chaser.
So, what is ahead for this new group of outstanding minds? We have an exclusive first look with a sneak peek promo, as well as some hints from Cohen himself, above. “There’s clearly a tonal shift,” he admits of the newest Chasers panel.
While he admits that they all have their unique personalities, Cohen teases that “Victoria is very, very nice, but totally lethal” and that “Brandon is a brilliant smack-talker and trivia whiz.”Buzzy Cohen confesses, “I’ve got some bravado, but I also like rooting for the contestants.
” That’s produced some friction in the Chaser lounge between myself and James because he’s a ride-or-die Team Chaser member.” Cohen, of course, is no stranger to competitive folks, having gone on a 10-day Jeopardy! streak in 2016 before winning the Tournament of Champions in 2017.
Cohen has now gone on to play in the Jeopardy! All-Star Games, where he was one of six captains. Even though he’s familiar with Jeopardy!, he’s also starred as Hanniball Buress’ trivia expert on ABC’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Most recently, Cohen hosted the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, foregoing the opportunity to play the beloved game for the first time in a long time, making it an ideal moment to become a Chaser.
Meet the Quintet of Chasers
Check out the new Season 3 poster below, then scroll down for some “trivia” on the rejiggered Chasers team, which may be missing one “Beast,” but now includes “The Queen,” “The Lightning Bolt,” and three more top-tier know-it-alls.
1. Buzzy Cohen
Cohen first captured the attention of the American public in 2016 with a 10-game run (how quaint!) on Jeopardy!, where his broad knowledge base and irreverent sense of humour left an indelible mark. (Buzzy Cohen)
He won the Tournament of Champions on Jeopardy! in 2017, making risky bets and sharing a lighthearted demeanour with presenter Alex Trebek and fellow contestants. (Jeopardy! featured his victory in its 35th-anniversary book.)
2. Victoria Groce
Groce, who grew up in Georgia, participated in a variety of academic competitions as a child, including academic bowl, Mathcounts, and Odyssey of the Mind. She appeared on Jeopardy! in 2005, where she ended David Madden’s 19-day winning streak.
3. Brandon Blackwell
Blackwell, like many others who went on to become quizzer experts, grew up in Queens watching game shows.
By the age of 20, he’d appeared on three separate quiz shows and won over $400,000, including $43K from a 2012 appearance on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and several hundred thousand dollars from a 2012 performance on Million Second Quiz.
4. Brad Rutter
Rutter grew up watching Jeopardy! and was an original Chaser on ABC’s reboot. Every night in his hometown of Lancaster, Pa., he spends time with his parents.
He made a Jeopardy! appearance while still a student at Johns Hopkins University, winning $55,102 and two Chevrolet Camaros after a five-game run. (Brad Rutter)
5. James Holzhauer
Holzhauer, another member of the original Chaser team from the ABC revival, graduated from the University of Illinois with a math degree in 2005. (James Holzhauer)
However, while in college, he accumulated a bankroll through online poker before deciding to stake it all on baseball wagers. Soon, he was entirely reliant on sports betting for a living.
Ratings for Season Two
The first half of The Chase’s second season (airing during the 2020-21 season) averaged a 0.48 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.62 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM).
Compared to season one, that’s a 30% drop in the demo and a 23% drop in viewership. The second half of The Chase’s second season (which aired in 2021-22) averaged a 0.31 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.37 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM).
Compared to season one, that’s a 55% drop in the demo and a 49% drop in viewership. While these figures do not account for additional delayed or streamed viewing, they are a good measure of how a show is doing, especially when compared to others on the same channel.
Though other economic reasons may be at play, higher-rated shows are more likely to be renewed, while lower-rated shows are more likely to be terminated. Find out how The Chase compares to other ABC TV series.
