One of the biggest power couples in the music business at one point was Shania Twain and Robert John “Mutt” Lange; their divorce eventually turned into one of the scandals in the industry.
With her recently released Netflix documentary Not Just a Girl, Shania Twain provided viewers with a closer glimpse into her life and opened up about one of the most trying times.
In this article, we will discover the reason behind Shania Twain’s divorce from “Mutt” Lange.
Shania Twain and Robert John Mutt Lange’s Relationship
Two months after the release of her debut album, the Grammy winner met the producer in June 1993. Although the album received positive reviews, it was a commercial disappointment.
Lange, who was known for working with rock artists like Def Leppard and AC/DC, volunteered to produce Twain’s subsequent album.
The Woman in Me, which was started by the duet and went on to become one of the all-time best-selling country albums, was released in February 1995.
However, the twosome’s working connection developed romantically prior to the album’s release, and they got married in December 1993.
Although Lange’s influence allowed Twain’s music to be heard by more people, she has always been sure to point out that she was the one who created her own image.
The two also collaborated on the country star’s two chart-topping albums, Come on Over and Up! However, things weren’t always rosy in the background. After being bitten by a tick in 2003, Shania Twain developed Lyme disease. The condition damaged her vocal cords and rendered her unable to travel or record new music.
Five years later, the Canadian woman’s marriage to Lange fell apart after he allegedly had an affair with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, a friend and former personal assistant who was then engaged to businessman Frédéric Thiébaud.
In her 2011 memoir, From This Moment On, Twain stated that she was “ready to die” for the first week after learning of the relationship.
“To sleep for all time and never get up. perhaps to harm someone. I was prepared to act frantically. However, in practice, there was nothing to do but put up with it.”
The singer of “Any Man of Mine” said that Frédéric was the one who truly notified her about Marie-relationship Anne’s with Lange during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres in 2011. Twain recalled, “I didn’t trust him and I thought for sure he was making it up. I was clearly just acting out of denial.”
The Broad City alum said in her autobiography that she wouldn’t change her experiences despite the public uproar because they helped her meet Frédéric, whom she married in 2011. She continued, “Although I admit I wouldn’t want to relive it, either. Once was sufficient.”
Shania Twain and Robert John Mutt Lange Divorce
After John Mutt Lange was charged with having an affair with Marie-Anne, Shania and Lange publicly announced their separation in 2008.
Despite their denials of the accusations at the time, Lange and Marie-Anne persisted in their love affair following Lange’s divorce from Twain.
Twain stated to the New York Post in 2015, “I don’t see her, ever.” I refuse to allow that trigger into my life. She is my past, not my future.” “I guess I thought… when I lost Mutt.
The pain of that, I thought, was… The intensity was comparable to when I lost my parents. And as you may know, it seemed fatal “She spoke.
“It appeared as though my life had come to an end permanently with my death. And I never recovered from losing my parents. I’m now contemplating how I’ll never be able to go past this.
“I must thus decide how I will proceed from there. How am I going to get myself out of this hole I’ve dug for myself? Simply put, you understand?”
Following the challenging circumstances, she eventually found love with Marie-husband, Anne’s Frederic Thiébaud, with whom she has been dating since 2011.
