Michael Stern, the father of Sarah, delivered an emotional victim impact statement to the court on Friday, declaring that his “soul was broken.”

“Since the day my daughter went missing, I’ve had nightmares and horrifying dreams. Since Sarah’s disappearance, I have been unable to sleep soundly. Michael Stern stated, “Many days I am completely unable to function.”

McAtasney gazed downward for most of the victim’s father’s speech. He was unable to look at the father for the length of the trial, but on Friday he was observed briefly lifting his head to stare at the sorrow on the face of the man whose daughter he murdered.

“The day I learned from detectives that Sarah had been murdered, I was crushed and numbed from shock. I’ve experienced nightmares and horrifying dreams “he remarked. “What horrifying act occurred to her body haunts me daily. Never again will I be able to embrace Sarah.”

Michael Stern was asked whether he had anything to say to the murderer following the adjournment of court. “I have absolutely no words for him,” he stated. When the court asked McAtasney if he had anything to say before he was sentenced, he declined. McAtasney’s attorney has already appealed the verdict.

If New Jersey had the death sentence, the prosecutor would have pursued it against McAtasney, whom he described as one of the most “heinous killers” in the history of Monmouth County. The trial lasted around eight weeks and was very traumatic for all sides.

In February, after the verdict was rendered, prosecutor Chris Decker stated: “It is not simple to ask a jury of 14 individuals, and ultimately 12 people, to convict a juvenile of a heinous crime such as murder. That was evident from the jury’s reaction as they left the room… Nonetheless, I believe that, in the end, justice was served.”
