Wayde Bowles, better known as the former wrestler Rocky Johnson, passed away on January 15 at the age of 75.
Rocky Johnson was a Canadian professional wrestler who competed from 1944 until 2020. His real name was Wayde Douglas Bowles.
He held numerous National Wrestling Alliance championships, including the NWA Television Champion and the first Black Georgia Heavyweight Champion (2 times). He and his teammate Tony Atlas won the World Tag Team Championship in 1983, making them the first Black champions in WWE history.
He was the father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a former WWE wrestler and actor. Johnson and Una Sparks have two children together: Wanda Bowles and Curtis Bowles.
Rocky Johnson’s Wrestling Career
Rocky Johnson, who was born in Nova Scotia in 1944, began wrestling in Ontario at the age of 20. Johnson competed in professional wrestling during the 1970s for the NWA territories, particularly in feuds with Harley Race and Jerry Lawler, two other wrestling greats.
Johnson’s early 1980s campaign was possibly the most notable. Johnson may be seen competing for Vince McMahon’s lucrative World Wrestling Federation (now WWE), going up against opponents like Don Muraco, Adrian Adonis, “Iron” Mike Sharpe, Greg Valentine, and Buddy Rose.
The WWF’s first-ever African American tag team champions were Johnson and Tony Atlas. On November 15, 1983, they won the tag team gold as the group “Soul Patrol.” In 1991, Johnson stepped away from the ring.
Rocky Johnson’s Death
According to Wikipedia Johnson passed away from a pulmonary embolism in the house his son bought for him in Lutz, Florida, on January 15, 2020, at the age of 75; the embolism was brought on by a blood clot that moved from a deep vein thrombosis in his leg.
After having a heart attack, Rocky Johnson passed away. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, his son, made the following observation on Instagram:
“Many of you wanted to know what had happened to my father. He had been suffering from a cold and an illness, and on Tuesday he had what is known as a deep vein thrombosis, which is essentially a clot in the leg.”

“He had a big ole blood clot that suddenly broke out, ran up his body, and went straight to his lung. It blocked his lung, and he passed away suddenly from a severe heart attack.”
Just a few days prior to Rocky Johnson’s passing, La Parka II, who suffered severe ring-related injuries during a performance in Monterrey, Mexico, also passed away. To Rocky Johnson’s friends and family, please accept our sympathies.
