The Lake Release Date: Who Will Be in the Lake?

Lake, an independent adventure game about delivering mail in a small American mountain town, will be released in September. Here’s everything we know about it so far.

If you don’t like how busy we are and how we live today, you might want to quit your job in a big city and move to a small mountain town.

Or, if that’s too big of a change for you right now, we suggest the indie game Lake as the next best thing.

Lake is an adventure game that was inspired by games like Firewatch and Life is Strange. It’s not an epic adventure. Instead, it’s a journey of self-discovery and growth.

Who Will Be in the Lake and What Are Their Roles?

Several well-known actors are in the cast, but they are not playing the roles they are known for. Jordan Gavaris(Instagram) plays Justin, a man who goes back to the town where he grew up to find his long-lost daughter Billie.

Gavaris is best known for playing Felix Dawkins with Tatiana Maslany in the Canadian sci-fi thriller TV show Orphan Black. Jordan’s turn here will give him another chance to show off his comedic skills and his Canadian roots in a lighter setting.

In that role, he used wry, jaded humor with a well-done British accent. Gavaris was also the main character on the American crime comedy-drama show Take-Two and the TV show Unnatural History.

Julia Stiles(Instagram), an actress, will work with Gavaris. Stiles may be best known for her iconic lead role as Kat Strafford in the late-1990s American romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, in which she starred with the late Heath Ledger and Jason Gordon Levitt.

Her role in the American teen dance movie Save the Last Dance, which came out in the early 2000s, is another one that will always be remembered as a classic of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her roles in Mona Lisa Smile and Nicky Parsons in the Bourne movies helped her move from teen to adult audiences.

For her television work, she has appeared in the fifth season of Dexter, for which she was nominated in both the Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy categories for Outstanding Guest Actress. Stiles’ role as Justin’s picture-perfect stepsister Maisy-May is different from the dramatic roles we’re used to seeing her in, but she has the acting skills to give the character a lot of depth.

Madison Shamoun(Instagram) plays Billie, who is Justin’s real daughter. As part of an ultimatum, the character of Billie has been sent to the lake with her real father, Justin. Shamoun gives her character the right amount of angst, and her character’s fear of getting close to Justin feels right for the situation. Most people know Shamoun from her roles in the TV comedies #BlackAF and Black-ish.

Additionally, there are the voices of Jon Dore, Carolyn Scott, Natalie Lisinka, Travis Nelson, Declan Whaley, and Terry Chen (from Criminal Minds) as well as actors from Goosebumps and The Expanse (The Expanse).

What’s the Story Behind the Lake?

Julian Doucet created, wrote, and was in charge of making The Lake (Killjoys). Michael Souther and Teza Lawrence were also executive producers as part of their company, Amaze Film + Television, which is based in Toronto. In May 2022, it was announced that Jordan Canning and Paul Fox would be the directors.

The Lake is Amazon’s first Canadian scripted series. It was filmed in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. So far, their only other Canadian shows have been the revival of the sketch comedy show The Kids in the Hall, the documentary series All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Canadian version of the comedy variety show LOL: Last One Laughing.

According to the show’s co-executive producers, Michael Souther and Teza Lawrence, their inspiration came from their summers spent on Lake Superior. “We’re excited and really looking forward to working with this incredibly talented and diverse cast,” they continued, before adding, “We’re proud of Jordan in his central role that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community.”

This is a show that will push boundaries and celebrate characters struggling to hold it all together in one of the most picturesque settings – cottage country,” says Amazon Studios’ Head of Canadian Originals Christina Wayne.

The Plot of Lake

The bright, summery style makes the viewer think of vacations and chilling out. But this summer seems to be the exact opposite of what the landscape says it should be.

The plot is quickly set up in the trailer: Billie’s parents give her a choice: spend the summer with Justin, her birth father who she hasn’t seen in years, or go to bible camp. Justin says, “I’m not like other birth dads; I’m a cool birth dad.” Billie asks, “Are you quoting Mean Girls?”

As the story goes on, the tension between Justin, a millennial, and his daughter, a Gen-Zer, as they try to connect, become a key part of the show.

When they get there, Justin doesn’t quite fit in with the people who drink boxed wine and slap each other on the shoulder. But that’s not his biggest problem. He’s in for an unpleasant surprise: his step-sister Maisy-May has bought the house where he and his family grew up (Julia Stiles).

It’s funny to see how different Justin is from his cold, practical stepsister. Justin’s free spirit and tendency to act on impulse led him to spend the whole summer trying to stop his stepsister. This kind of childish behavior could make it hard for him to connect with Billie, who needs a good example to follow.

A lot of the show seems to be about the emotional trauma that needs to be fixed between the brother and step-sister, and how this and other traumas have kept Justin from growing up and showing up in his relationship with Billie as more than just a goofball.

“Justin (Jordan Gavaris), a gay man who just got divorced, brings his mixed-race daughter Billie (Madison Shamoun) to the lake where he used to spend his summers as a boy. Justin hopes that spending the summer with Billie will help them get closer to each other.

Still, Justin’s obsession with getting his stepsister Maisy-May (Julia Stiles) to give up control of the family cottage only drives them further apart. Maisy, the “Iron Lady of the Lake,” will have to grow up a lot before she can figure out where she fits in a family.
